SCHLAGE GF3000 SERIES OVERVIEW

The GF3000 Series electromagnetic shear locks are available in mortise mount or low profile surface mount options. Both feature superior hold force with advanced microprocessor controlled electronic features including auto sensed voltage, auto relocking, adjustable relock time delay and options for integrating into an access control system.

The mortise shear lock offers the advantage of a totally concealed locking mechanism, providing superior security and appearance while allowing for normal door movement. The patented design incorporates locking tabs on the magnet assembly with mating grooves in the armature plate. The surface mounted model provides powerful hold force in a low profile design.

All Schlage electromagnetic locks come with a limited lifetime warranty on the magnetic coil assembly for added confidence in the longevity of these robust products.

Schlage Electronics GF3000TJ – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the Schlage GF3000TJ shear lock for inswinging or outswinging doors?
The GF3000TJ is the top jamb surface mounted version, built for inswinging doors. If your door swings out, you want the GF3000SM instead, which carries the same 3000 lb hold force in a surface mount for outswinging openings. Ordering the wrong one of the pair is the most common mistake on this series.
2) Does the Schlage GF3000TJ shear lock unlock on power loss?
Yes, it is fail-safe. Cut the power and the magnet releases, so the opening is free to swing. That is the behavior most life safety plans expect on an egress door, but it also means the door is unsecured during a power outage unless the access control panel is on battery backup.
3) What voltage and current does the GF3000TJ surface shear lock need?
It auto-selects between 12 and 24 VDC filtered, so you do not set a jumper. Draw is 900 mA at 12 VDC and 450 mA at 24 VDC. Size your supply off the 12 volt figure if you are running a bank of these, since the current nearly doubles at the lower voltage.
4) What is the difference between the two GF3000TJ models I have to choose from?
One comes with the Door Status Monitor and Magnetic Bond Sensor, one without. DSM senses whether the door is open or closed, MBS reports whether the magnet is actually bonded and secure. If your access control head end is going to annunciate door position or verify lock status, order the DSM/MBS version; the sensors are not field-added later in a clean way.
5) Can I use a Schlage GF3000 shear lock on a fire rated door?
The GF3000 Series carries a UL 10C listing for positive pressure fire tests of door assemblies up to 3 hours, plus cUL and CSFM, and is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.23 Grade 1. Those are the listings an inspector on a healthcare, education, or government job typically asks for.
6) What is the closest cross-brand equivalent to the Schlage GF3000TJ surface top jamb shear lock?
The SDC HiShear 1561TJ is the nearest match in configuration: it is an electromagnetic shear lock with surface top jamb mounting, rated at 2000 lb holding force. The GF3000TJ is surface mounted for inswinging doors at 3000 lb holding force. Both are heavy duty. If the opening was specified around a 3000 lb hold figure, the 1561TJ's 2000 lb rating is the difference to confirm before swapping.
7) Should I use a surface mounted shear lock or a concealed mortise one?
The surface mounted GF3000TJ mounts on the face of the frame at the top jamb, so it is the quicker retrofit on a door that is already hung and it keeps the hold force at 3000 lb in a low profile housing. The mortise versions in the same series (GF3000 and GF3000TRD for top of door or top rail, GF3000BRD for bottom of door or bottom rail) hide the mechanism entirely for appearance and security, but they need the door and frame prepped. Pick GF3000TRD specifically if the air gap adjustment will not be reachable once the door is hung.
8) Will a shear lock still pull in if my door and frame gap is not tight?
The GF3000 Series is rated to jump a 1/4 inch gap with no in-rush current, so a slightly out of true opening will still bond. Beyond that you are into shimming or realigning the door. The built-in automatic relock switch, with a time delay adjustable from 2 to 30 seconds, handles the moment between the door closing and the magnet energizing again.
9) Can this Schlage shear lock go on an exterior door in a cold climate?
Operating range is 0 to 49 degrees C (0 to 120 degrees F), and the series is specified for low temperature operation. That covers a vestibule or a sheltered exterior opening in most of the country, but a door that sees sub-zero F conditions is outside the stated range.
10) Will the GF3000TJ tie into my existing access control system?
It connects to most access control systems and is microprocessor controlled, taking a standard 12 or 24 VDC feed from the panel or power supply. Order the DSM/MBS version if you want door position and bond status reported back to the head end. There is no battery in the unit, so it lives entirely off the panel power.
11) Do the SDC HiShear shear locks carry the same certifications as the Schlage GF3000TJ?
The GF3000TJ is listed to UL 10C, cUL, CSFM and ANSI/BHMA A156.23. If your specification calls out those listings by name, verify the certification listings on any SDC HiShear model - 1560, 1561S, 1561TJ or 1562SC - against the spec before substituting, since a shear lock on a fire rated opening is usually approved by listing rather than by hold force alone.
12) What does the Schlage GF3000TJ look like once it is installed?
The housing is black anodized aluminum, finished off with a BHMA 628 satin aluminum decorative plate. It is a low profile surface housing, so it sits at the head of the frame rather than projecting like a conventional mag lock bracket. Substrate is aluminum throughout and it is a heavy duty commercial unit, not a residential device.
