The GF3000 Series electromagnetic shear locks are available in mortise mount or low profile surface mount options. Both feature superior hold force with advanced microprocessor controlled electronic features including auto sensed voltage, auto relocking, adjustable relock time delay and options for integrating into an access control system.
The mortise shear lock offers the advantage of a totally concealed locking mechanism, providing superior security and appearance while allowing for normal door movement. The patented design incorporates locking tabs on the magnet assembly with mating grooves in the armature plate. The surface mounted model provides powerful hold force in a low profile design.
All Schlage electromagnetic locks come with a limited lifetime warranty on the magnetic coil assembly for added confidence in the longevity of these robust products.

1) Will a Schlage GF3000SM shear lock work on an outswinging door?
Outswing is exactly what the GF3000SM is built for. It's the surface mounted member of the GF3000 shear lock family for outswinging doors, mounted on the surface rather than mortised into the door or frame. If your door swings in, order the GF3000TJ instead, which carries the same 3000 lb hold force in a surface top jamb configuration for inswinging doors.
2) Is the Schlage GF3000SM fail-safe or fail-secure? What happens in a power outage?
Fail-safe. The GF3000SM is an electromagnetic shear lock, so it holds only while energized: cut the power and the magnet releases and the door is free to open. That is the required behavior on an egress door, and it is also why the lock has to be tied to your fire alarm and power supply the way your local code requires. If you need a lock that stays locked without power, a shear lock is the wrong device type.
3) What power supply do I need for a Schlage GF3000SM shear lock?
Either 12 or 24 VDC filtered will run it. Automatic voltage selection means the lock senses which one it is fed, so there is no jumper or switch to set. Size the supply for 900 mA at 12 VDC or 450 mA at 24 VDC per lock, and note it is filtered DC that's required, not raw or unfiltered output. There is no in-rush current to allow for. The lock is not battery operated.
4) What's the difference between the DSM/MBS version of the GF3000SM and the plain one?
Two build options. The base GF3000SM gives you the lock alone. Yes. The GF3000SM is UL 10C listed for positive pressure fire tests of door assemblies at 3 hours, and it carries cUL and CSFM listings along with ANSI/BHMA A156.23 Grade 1. That combination is what an institutional or code-driven job normally has to show. Note the certifications listed here are for the standard model; delayed egress is a separate model family with its own listings.
6) Should I use a surface mounted shear lock or a concealed mortise one?
It comes down to whether you can machine the door and frame. The GF3000SM mounts on the surface in a low profile housing, so it goes onto an existing opening without cutting the door or rail, and it's the practical choice on a retrofit or where the frame can't be prepped.
