ABH ABH-PT1000-US28 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will an ABH PT1000 power transfer work on a fire-rated door?
Yes. The PT1000 power transfer is UL/ULC listed for use on fire doors, which is why it shows up on stairwell and cross-corridor openings where an electrified lock or exit device still has to be fed. It mortises into the door edge and the frame, so the transfer itself stays inside the fire-rated assembly rather than bridging it with an exposed loop.
2) How many wires does the ABH PT1000 power transfer carry, and what is it rated for electrically?
Standard PT1000 and PT1000SC units carry (10) 24 AWG wires. The EZ versions, PT1000EZ and PT1000SCEZ, carry (12) 24 AWG wires. All of them are rated 24VDC maximum at 1A. That wire count is what lets one transfer feed an electrified lock plus monitoring, request-to-exit and a door position switch on the same opening instead of running a second device.
3) What is the difference between the PT1000 and the PT1000SC swing clear version?
The SC suffix is for openings hung on swing clear hinges, where the leaf swings fully out of the clear opening and the door edge ends up in a different relationship to the frame than on a standard butt hinge. The PT1000SC is geometrically set up for that condition; the plain PT1000 is not. Both carry (10) 24 AWG wires. If the opening has swing clear hinges, which is common in healthcare corridors and ADA-driven clear width work, order the SC.
4) Should I order the EZ connector version of the ABH PT1000 or the standard flying leads?
Order EZ if you want to plug in rather than splice. The PT1000EZ and PT1000SCEZ come with (12) 24 AWG wires terminated in Molex Micro-Fit 3.0 EZ connectors, so the door side mates to the frame side without a splice in the raceway, and ABH publishes a wire color and position sheet for Allegion connector pinouts. Standard PT1000 and PT1000SC give you (10) 24 AWG flying leads to terminate yourself, which is what you want if you are landing to a device that does not use a Micro-Fit plug.
5) Is a concealed power transfer or an exposed door loop the right choice for my opening?
Two different jobs. The ABH PT1000 mortises into the door and frame edges and disappears completely when the door is closed, so it is the choice where security matters (nothing to cut) or where the opening is fire rated. The tradeoff is that both the door and frame have to be prepped, so it is easiest on new doors or an existing transfer mortise. An exposed door cord like the Locknetics DC Series 20 inch medium duty cord surface mounts instead, no mortising, which is why it survives on retrofits where you cannot cut the door. Use the cord on a back-of-house opening; use the PT1000 where it will be seen or attacked.
6) Is a Locknetics DC Series door cord the same thing as an ABH PT1000 power transfer?
They both carry power from frame to door, but they are different parts and prep differently. The Locknetics DC Series 20 inch medium duty door cord is a flexible cord with aluminum end caps that runs on the surface between frame and door. The ABH PT1000 mortises into the door and frame edges and is completely concealed when the door is closed, carrying 24VDC at 1A on (10) 24 AWG wires. If the opening is already cut for a concealed transfer, or the cord would be exposed to abuse or tampering, the PT1000 is the concealed answer; if the door and frame cannot be mortised, a surface door cord such as the DC Series 20 inch is the route that avoids machining.
7) The door is fire rated - can I use a surface door cord instead of a concealed power transfer?
For a fire rated opening the ABH PT1000 is the part to specify: it is UL/ULC listed for use on fire doors, mortised into the door and frame edges with all-metal construction and metal backboxes. The Locknetics DC Series 20 inch medium duty door cord is a surface-mounted cord with aluminum end caps and is a general medium duty transfer, not a fire door listed concealed unit. On a fire rated door where the transfer has to be concealed and listed, the PT1000 is the direct choice, and it is available in standard, swing clear PT1000SC, EZ connector PT1000EZ, and swing clear EZ PT1000SCEZ configurations.
8) Will the ABH PT1000 hold up on a high traffic door, or will the wires break?
It is built for abuse. The PT1000 is all metal, including the backboxes, with no plastic parts, which is the usual failure point on a concealed transfer taking hundreds of cycles a day. ABH calls it out specifically for high abuse and heavy traffic. It is a commercial-rated product, not a residential one.
9) Does the ABH PT1000 come with mounting hardware, or do I need to order fasteners separately?
Fasteners are in the box. Each PT1000 is packaged individually with fasteners for wood, steel, or aluminum doors and frames, so one part number covers a hollow metal frame, a wood door, or an aluminum storefront leaf. What you still need to supply is whatever the electrified device on the door side calls for and the wire from the transfer back to your power supply or controller.
10) Is the ABH PT1000 power transfer BAA compliant for a federal or government job?
Yes, the PT1000 is BAA qualified, so it can be specified on federally funded work carrying Buy American Act requirements. That matters on GSA, VA, military and federally funded school and transit projects where the access control hardware has to clear the same sourcing test as the rest of the package.
11) How do I lay out the door and frame prep for an ABH PT1000?
Do not eyeball it. ABH publishes a mortise template covering the PT1000 and PT1000EZ, and a separate one for the PT1000SC swing clear version, because the swing clear geometry is not the same prep. Both pockets have to line up across the door edge and the frame rabbet for the unit to close cleanly, so the template gets used on both halves of the opening.
12) Can the ABH PT1000 run data and monitoring signals, or only power to an electric lock?
Both. The 24VDC 1A rating covers the power side for an electrified lock, electric strike or electrified exit device trim, and the ten (twelve on EZ units) 24 AWG conductors give you spare pairs for low-voltage signalling: latch monitoring, request-to-exit and door position back to the panel. ABH describes it as a power and data transfer, not a power-only device.
13) What is the simpler option if I only need to run a couple of wires to a door and do not want to machine the frame?
The Locknetics DC Series 20 inch medium duty door cord is the simpler route - it is a surface applied cord with aluminum end caps, so no mortise into the door or frame edge is needed. The ABH PT1000 takes a concealed mortise into both the door and frame edges and carries (10) 24 AWG wires at 24VDC 1A, with a 12 wire EZ connector version using Molex Micro-Fit 3.0 for higher wire counts. Choose the door cord when the job cannot take machining, and the PT1000 when the transfer needs to disappear when the door is closed or when the higher wire count is required.
14) Can I get an ABH PT1000 power transfer to match a dark bronze or white painted frame?
Six finishes are offered across every wiring configuration: Painted Brass, Painted Bronze, Painted Dark Bronze, Painted Black, Painted White, and Satin Aluminum. Since the unit only shows on the door and frame edges, most jobs pick the finish that matches the frame rather than the lockset trim.
