ABUS 37/55HB75 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the ABUS Granit 37/55 be keyed alike to padlocks I already have on site?
Yes, if your existing locks run the ABUS Plus disc cylinder. The RK version of the 37/55 can be re-keyed to match an existing ABUS Plus key, which is how facilities standardize a run of gates and containers on one key. Ordering a mix of keying types without confirming the cylinder platform is the usual way this goes wrong.
2) What is the difference between the code card and the security card version of this ABUS padlock?
It comes down to who can cut a key. With the code card, the number printed on the card is all anyone needs to have keys made at a retailer, which is convenient and offers no control. The SZP security card version restricts duplication: original keys are only cut by a licensed ABUS dealer on presentation of the enclosed card. For a property manager or MRO buyer who cares about key control across a site, specify the security card version.
3) How does the ABUS Granit 37/55 compare to a Sargent or Medeco padlock for a commercial site?
Different jobs. The ABUS Granit 37/55 is a hardened steel, EN 12320 lock built around the ABUS Plus disc cylinder, aimed at high-theft-risk exterior openings. The Sargent 758 and 858 padlocks are key retaining and non-key retaining versions of a standard brass-body padlock with a stainless shackle, and the Sargent 60-858-2 takes a removable core, which is the one to look at if your site is already on an interchangeable core system and you want the padlocks on the same keyway as your door cylinders. The Medeco 5260 is a 52 Series brass body lock with the same 7/16 inch shackle diameter as the ABUS and M3 key technology, so it is the closest match on shackle size if you need Medeco keying. The Medeco 521 G8R has a solid stainless steel body for weather-tight service.
4) My hasp only takes a 5/16 inch shackle. What padlock should I use instead?
The ABUS Granit 37/55HB75 will not go on, its shackle is 7/16 inch. For a 5/16 inch opening, look at the Schlage KS23D/KS23F brass padlock or the Medeco 54515G XT electronic padlock, both of which use a 5/16 inch shackle. Measure the hasp slot before you order rather than the old lock, since a worn shackle reads smaller than it is.
5) What padlock has the same 7/16 inch shackle diameter as the ABUS 37/55HB75 Granit?
The Medeco 5260 padlock in the 52 Series also uses a 7/16 inch shackle diameter, matching the 7/16 inch shackle on the ABUS 37/55HB75. The Medeco 5260 has a brass body in a satin chrome finish and uses M3 key technology, where the 37/55HB75 has a hardened alloy steel body and shackle with a black Granit corrosion-resistant coating and an ABUS Plus disc cylinder. If the hasp opening was drilled for a 7/16 inch shackle, either will pass through it.
6) I need a padlock that fits an existing small-format interchangeable core keying program instead of ABUS Plus - what should I use?
The ABUS 37/55HB75 Granit uses an ABUS Plus disc cylinder, which can be re-keyed to match an existing ABUS Plus key but is not a removable core design. For a facility standardized on a removable core system, the Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless steel shackle from the 758/858 Series, so the core can be pulled and replaced with one on your own keyway. Choose the ABUS when you want the hardened steel Granit body and the Sargent when core interchangeability across the site matters more.
7) Is the Schlage KS23D a substitute for the ABUS 37/55HB75?
They serve different openings. The Schlage KS23D/KS23F is a brass padlock in the 20 Series with a 5/16 inch shackle diameter, while the ABUS 37/55HB75 Granit has a 7/16 inch shackle and a body 2-29/64 inches wide with hardened steel construction and a black Granit coating for corrosion resistance. The 5/16 inch Schlage shackle will pass through a hasp drilled for 7/16 inch, but the reverse is not true - a hasp sized for the Schlage will not accept the thicker ABUS shackle. The ABUS is the one built for warehouses, factory gates, containers and trucks at high theft risk.
8) Is the ABUS Granit 37/55HB75 suitable for outdoor use on gates and containers?
It is built for it. The lock carries a black Granit coating specifically for corrosion resistance, and body and shackle are hardened alloy steel. ABUS lists warehouses, industrial sites, factory gates, containers and lorries as the intended applications. It is a commercial-duty lock, not a residential locker padlock.
9) What standard is the ABUS Granit 37/55 padlock made to?
It is manufactured to the European standard EN 12320, the padlock and chain security standard, and ABUS states it meets the special requirements of insurance companies. That is the reference to quote if an insurer or a spec sheet asks what the lock is rated to.
10) Why is a double ball locking padlock better for a container or truck door?
Container and trailer doors get attacked by pulling and prying on the lock body, not just by cutting. The 37/55 uses a double ball locking mechanism, meaning the shackle is captured on both legs, which is what gives it its pulling resistance. Single-ball or spring-latch padlocks release when one leg is defeated. That plus the hardened steel shackle is the reason this lock gets specified where a cheap brass-body padlock would be cut off in seconds.
11) What else do I need to order to mount this ABUS Granit padlock properly?
The padlock alone is only as strong as what it hangs on. ABUS pairs the Granit 37/55 with their high-security Hasp 130, and calls that combination out explicitly. If you are protecting a hall door, gate or warehouse opening, budget for the hasp along with the lock; bolting a high-security padlock to a light stamped hasp moves the weak point to the hasp.
12) What is the difference between a key retaining and non-key retaining padlock when choosing against the ABUS 37/55HB75?
Key retaining means the key cannot be withdrawn while the shackle is open, which forces the lock to be relocked before the key leaves. The Sargent 758 is a key retaining standard padlock in a US4 satin brass finish, while the Sargent 858 is the non-key retaining version with a stainless steel shackle, also US4 satin brass. The ABUS 37/55HB75 Granit ships with two keys, one of which has an LED light, and uses an ABUS Plus disc cylinder. Pick the Sargent 758 style if your procedure depends on the padlock never being left hanging open.
13) For an exposed outdoor gate, how does the ABUS 37/55HB75 compare to a stainless steel body padlock?
The ABUS 37/55HB75 Granit handles weather through a black Granit coating over a hardened alloy steel body for improved corrosion protection, and is built to European standard EN 12320. The Medeco 521 G8R is a weather-tight padlock with a solid stainless steel body, supplied less pop-out cylinder so you provide the cylinder. If you want corrosion resistance from the base metal itself and already stock Medeco cylinders, the G8R is the route; if you want a complete keyed lock out of the box with the Granit hardened steel construction, take the ABUS.
14) Is there an electronic alternative to the ABUS 37/55HB75 for audit trail and scheduled access?
The ABUS 37/55HB75 Granit is a mechanical padlock with an ABUS Plus disc cylinder and two supplied keys. If you need electronic credentialing rather than a mechanical key, the Medeco 54515G is an XT electronic indoor/outdoor padlock in the System Series, non-key retaining, with a 5/16 inch shackle diameter and cylinder included. Note the shackle step down from the 7/16 inch on the ABUS, so confirm your hasp before swapping.
15) Which padlock should I use if I need a controlled key system but not the ABUS Plus keyway?
The ABUS 37/55HB75 Granit controls duplication through a security card, where original keys can only be cut by a licensed ABUS dealer on presentation of that card. For a comparable restricted approach on a different platform, the Sargent 82-856 is a non-key retaining padlock in the KESO Series with a 2 inch by 2 inch brass case and a stainless steel shackle. The ABUS keeps the hardened steel Granit body and 7/16 inch shackle; the Sargent puts you on KESO keying with a brass case.
16) My hasp has a tight staple opening - is the ABUS 37/55HB75 shackle clearance enough, or should I pick something else?
The ABUS 37/55HB75 Granit gives 1-5/64 inches of horizontal shackle clearance and 2-61/64 inches of vertical clearance, with a body 2-29/64 inches wide, so the staple has to accept a 7/16 inch shackle and there must be room for that body. Where the opening is narrower, the Sargent 60-858-2 uses a 2 inch stainless steel shackle and the Sargent 82-856 has a 2 inch by 2 inch brass case, both smaller-format options. Measure the staple width and the gap above it before committing.
17) How many keys come with the ABUS 37/55HB75 and is one lighted?
Two keys ship with the lock and one of them has an LED light built into the head. That matters more than it sounds on a yard gate or a container at night, where finding the keyway is the actual problem.
18) Does the ABUS 37/55HB75 keep the key captive while unlocked?
That is one to settle before you standardize a site. If key retention is the requirement, so the key cannot be pulled while the lock is open and left hanging unsecured, the Sargent 758 is a key retaining padlock and the Sargent 858 and the Sargent 82-856 KESO are non-key retaining. Property managers running a crew through multiple gates usually want key retaining so locks do not get left open.
