Padlock brass 85

Our 85 padlock made from brass is one of our classic locks for a number of use cases.

  • Solid brass lock body
  • Shackle made from hardened steel with NANO PROTECT™ coating
  • Can be made keyed alike to already existing keys/locks by the trade (Version Service)

THE ALL-ROUNDER

The brass padlock 85 is suitable for many different use cases.

Whether bags or suitcases, doors or closets, caskets or lockers, basements or sheds: With padlock 85, you can reliably protect your valuables from theft. The lock body is made of solid brass, the hardened shackle has a Nano Protect™ coating, which makes the lock very durable. It locks automatically when the shackle is pressed. Then the precision pin cylinder can only be opened with a key. The "Service" version of the 85 is a plus: For example, you can have our dealers customize the lock of your front door and shed and use the same key for both.

Technology:

  • Solid lock body made from brass
  • Hardened steel shackle with NANO PROTECT™ plating for extreme corrosion resistance
  • Can be made keyed alike to already existing keys/locks by the trade (Version Service)
  • Double bolted (as of 1 3/16)"
  • Automatic locking: Locking without key by pushing down the shackle
  • Paracentric keyway for increased protection against manipulation
  • Inner components made from rust-free high quality materials
  • Precision pin cylinder with mushroom pins

Operation and use:

  • 85/20 – 85/40: To secure valuables/goods of medium value or at an average risk of theft
  • 85/50 – 85/70: To secure valuables/goods of greater value or at a high risk of theft
  • 85IB: Ideal for use in coastal and port areas

ABUS 85/50HB80 KD – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will an ABUS 85/50HB80 padlock fit through a hasp with a 1-1/2 inch gap?
Yes. The 85/50HB80 gives 1-1/2 inches of horizontal shackle clearance, so it passes through a hasp eye or chain link up to that width. Vertically you get 3-1/8 inches of clearance, which is what the HB80 long shackle buys you over a standard shackle: enough height to reach over a thick hasp, a gate chain, or a pair of locker loops that a short-shackle lock won't span.
2) Can I get ABUS 85/50 padlocks all keyed to one key for a building?
Yes, and this is the main ordering decision. The 85/50HB80 is sold three ways: keyed alike, so every lock on the order opens with the same key; keyed different, so each lock has its own key; or master keyed, so each lock keeps its own key while one master opens the whole set. Property managers running a fleet of gates, meters, and storage rooms usually want keyed alike within a function and master keyed across the site. Pick the keying on the order, because it is set when the cylinder is pinned.
3) Is the ABUS 85/50 padlock good enough for outdoor gates and coastal weather?
The shackle is hardened steel with a NANO PROTECT coating for corrosion resistance, and the internal components are rust-free materials, so an outdoor gate or an exterior utility enclosure is within what the 85 is built for. ABUS points salt-air work specifically at the 85IB, calling it out for coastal and port areas. If your site is on the water, ask for the IB variant rather than the standard brass 85.
4) What is the difference between the ABUS 85 brass padlock and a stainless steel body padlock?
The 85 has a solid brass body with a hardened, coated steel shackle. Brass will not rust and takes weather well, and it is the common choice for general commercial and outdoor use. A stainless steel body is the harder case: the Medeco 521 G8R weather-tight padlock uses a solid stainless steel body, and Sargent's 858 and 60-858-2 use stainless steel shackles. Those are what to look at for wash-down, marine, or high-abuse environments. For a brass equivalent from another brand, the Medeco 5260 and the Schlage KS23D/KS23F are both brass body padlocks.
5) Can I put my facility's existing key system core into an ABUS 85/50 padlock?
No. The 85/50HB80 uses ABUS's own 5-pin cylinder in a paracentric keyway, and keying to your existing ABUS keys is done through the trade Service version. It does not take an interchangeable core from another manufacturer's system. If your site is standardized on a removable core so locksmiths can rekey padlocks the same way they rekey doors, the Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock. If your system is Medeco, the 54515G is a System Series padlock and the 5260 uses M3 key technology.
6) What is the closest brass-body padlock to the ABUS 85/50HB80 if a stainless steel body is needed for a coastal site instead?
The ABUS 85/50HB80 uses a solid brass lock body with a hardened steel shackle carrying a NANO PROTECT coating for corrosion resistance. Where a stainless steel body is preferred over brass, the Medeco 521 G8R weather-tight padlock has a solid stainless steel body and is supplied less the pop-out cylinder, so a cylinder is specified separately. The two differ in body material and in whether the cylinder ships with the lock.
7) Which brass padlock is comparable to the ABUS 85/50HB80 but with a thicker shackle?
The ABUS 85/50HB80 carries an 8mm shackle diameter with 1-1/2 inch horizontal and 3-1/8 inch vertical shackle clearance, and a 2 inch body width. The Medeco 5260 is a 52 Series brass body padlock with a 7/16 inch shackle diameter and M3 key technology in a satin chrome finish. Both are brass bodied; the 5260 runs a heavier shackle section and a different cylinder platform.
8) The ABUS 85/50HB80 uses its own 5-pin cylinder. What padlock takes the same interchangeable core as the rest of a facility's locks?
The ABUS 85/50HB80 has a precision 5-pin cylinder with a paracentric keyway and can be ordered keyed alike, keyed different, or master keyed. Where a facility standardizes on removable cores so the padlock rekeys with the doors, the Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless steel shackle in the 758/858 Series. That is the substitution to make when core interchange, rather than factory keying, is the requirement.
9) The ABUS 85/50HB80 locks automatically when the shackle is pressed and the key comes out. Which padlock keeps the key captive until the lock is closed?
The ABUS 85/50HB80 locks by pushing the shackle down, without the key. On sites where the key must stay in the lock until the shackle is secured, so an open padlock is never left with the key walking away, the Sargent 758 is a key retaining standard padlock in a US4 satin brass finish. For non-key-retaining behavior closer to the ABUS, the Sargent 858 is the non-key-retaining padlock with a stainless steel shackle in the same US4 satin brass.
10) What replaces a keyed ABUS 85/50HB80 when access needs to be audited or scheduled electronically?
The ABUS 85/50HB80 is a mechanical keyed padlock with a 5-pin cylinder, so access control is handled through how it is keyed. Where a gate or enclosure needs electronic credential control instead, the Medeco 54515G XT is an electronic indoor/outdoor padlock, non-key retaining, with a 5/16 inch shackle diameter and cylinder included. That is a different access platform, not a mechanical equal.
11) How wide is the ABUS 85/50 padlock body, and will it sit flat on a narrow hasp?
The body measures 2 inches wide. That is the footprint you need clear on the hasp plate or the gate bracket. On a narrow stile door or a slim locker hasp, measure the flat before you commit, because a 2 inch brass body needs somewhere to hang without fouling the frame. The long 3-1/8 inch shackle clearance means most of the lock's height sits above the hasp rather than against it.
12) Can an ABUS 85 padlock be keyed to match keys I already have?
ABUS states the 85 can be made keyed alike to existing keys and locks by the trade, through its Service version. That is how you get the shed padlock and the front door on one key. It is a trade operation on the cylinder, not something done in the field with the lock in hand, so it has to be specified rather than adapted after delivery.
13) Is the ABUS 85/50 a big enough padlock, or should I go up a size?
ABUS splits the 85 line by risk level: the 85/20 through 85/40 sizes are for goods of medium value or average theft risk, and the 85/50 through 85/70 are for higher value goods or high theft risk. The 85/50 sits at the bottom of that upper band, so it is the right starting point for a tool crib, a contractor gate, or a switchgear cabinet. Low-risk interior cabinets do not need it.
14) Does the ABUS 85/50 padlock lock without the key, and does the key stay in when open?
It locks automatically. Push the shackle down and it latches, no key needed, which matters when a crew is closing out a dozen gates or meter cabinets at the end of a shift. To open it, you need the key in the precision pin cylinder. If you specifically need a lock the key cannot be pulled from while it is open, so a technician cannot walk off with the lock hanging unsecured, that is a key-retaining design, and the Sargent 758 is a key retaining padlock we carry.
15) How pick-resistant is the ABUS 85 cylinder?
The 85 runs a 5-pin precision pin cylinder with mushroom pins and a paracentric keyway. Mushroom pins resist raking and single-pin picking, and the paracentric keyway narrows the path a pick has to work through. Both are anti-manipulation features rather than anti-force ones. The force side is handled by the brass body and the double bolting, which locks the shackle at both legs on sizes from 1-3/16 inches up.
16) Is the ABUS 85 shackle double bolted, and why does that matter on a gate?
Double bolting means the shackle is locked on both legs rather than just the heel, so cutting or prying one side still leaves the lock closed. ABUS applies it on the 85 from 1-3/16 inches up, which covers the 85/50. On a chain-link gate or a roll-up door hasp, where an attacker gets a tool on one leg of the shackle, that second bolt is the difference.
17) Do I need an electronic padlock instead of a keyed one like the ABUS 85?
The 85/50HB80 is a mechanical keyed padlock, so access is controlled by who holds the key, and there is no record of who opened what. If you need audit trail, scheduled access, or the ability to cancel a contractor's credential without pulling and rekeying locks, that is an electronic padlock, and the Medeco 54515G XT is an electronic indoor/outdoor padlock. For gates and cabinets where a master key system already covers the site, mechanical stays simpler and there is nothing to charge.
18) Is the Schlage KS23D/KS23F a direct substitute for the ABUS 85/50HB80?
Both are brass padlocks, but they are not the same lock. The ABUS 85/50HB80 is a long shackle model with an 8mm shackle diameter, 3-1/8 inch vertical shackle clearance and a 5-pin cylinder. The Schlage KS23D/KS23F is a 20 Series brass padlock with a 5/16 inch shackle diameter. If the opening needs the long shackle reach to clear a thick hasp or a chain link, the shackle geometry is the deciding difference, not the body material.
19) Which brass-case padlock matches the 2 inch body width of the ABUS 85/50HB80?
The ABUS 85/50HB80 has a 2 inch body width and is rated for commercial use. The Sargent 82-856 is a non-key-retaining padlock with a 2 inch by 2 inch brass case and a stainless steel shackle, built on the KESO Series cylinder platform. Body footprint is close; the cylinder platform and key system are where the two part company.
20) Is the ABUS 85/50 a commercial-duty padlock or a consumer one?
It is classed as commercial. The brass body, hardened coated shackle, double bolting, and master keyable 5-pin cylinder are what puts it on gates, switchboards, tool boxes, cellar windows, and storage rooms rather than on a gym locker. The keying options are the tell: a lock offered keyed alike and master keyed is built to be run as a fleet across a site.
