Accentra AU-4780LN-626 12V – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What does fail safe no override mean on the Accentra 4780LN electrified lever lock?
Fail safe means the outside lever unlocks when power is removed, so a power loss or a fire alarm release leaves the opening free for egress and entry from the outside. No override means there is no key cylinder to mechanically lock or unlock the outside lever; control is entirely from the access control system. If you need a key to override the electrified function, the 4780LN is the wrong function to order.
2) Will the Accentra 4780LN Augusta lever fit a 1-3/8 inch door?
Yes. The 4700LN chassis adjusts from 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches, which covers standard commercial 1-3/4 inch doors and older 1-3/8 inch interior doors. If your leaf is thicker than 1-3/4 inches you need the 4700 chassis instead, which adjusts from 1-3/4 to 2 inches.
3) Does the 4780LN need a 2-3/4 inch backset, and will it drop into an existing cylindrical prep?
Standard backset is 2-3/4 inches with a 1/2 inch stainless steel latchbolt throw, and the lock ships with the ANSI strike at 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inches with a 1-1/4 inch lip to center. If your door is already prepped 161 with a 2-3/4 backset and an ANSI strike, the chassis goes into the same hole. A 2-3/8 inch backset prep is a different bore location and will not line up.
4) Do I have to specify 12V or 24V when ordering the Accentra 4780LN?
Yes, voltage is an order option, not field selectable. Every finish is offered in 12VDC and 24VDC, so match the lock to the output of your power supply or access control panel before ordering. Pick the wrong one and the solenoid will not operate correctly.
5) Can the Accentra 4780LN go on a fire rated door?
The 4700LN series is UL-cUL fire rated up to 3 hours and certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 1, with the Augusta lever meeting ADA. The 4700LN is also Windstorm certified, subject to local code. For a fail safe electrified lock on a fire door, confirm the alarm release scheme with your AHJ since the outside lever unlocks on power loss.
6) My doors are 2 inches thick - does the Accentra 4780LN fit, and what else should I look at?
The 4700LN chassis is adjustable from 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, so a full 2 inch door is outside that range. For thicker leaves, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 electrified Grade 1 fail safe lever is listed for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors. On a non-electrified opening, the Corbin Russwin CL3110 Grade 1 vandal resistant passage lever also covers 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch and is fire rated.
7) If my access control panel only supplies 12V, which fail safe lever locks work?
The Accentra 4780LN is offered in a 12VDC build across all of its finishes, so it drops straight onto a 12V panel. The Corbin Russwin CL33903 is also available as a 12VAC/DC Grade 1 fail safe electrified cylindrical lever with the NZ lever and D rose. If your panel is 24V instead, the 4780LN is also built in 24VDC.
8) Can a keypad lever lock replace the Accentra 4780LN on an access-controlled door?
No. The 4780LN is an electrified cylindrical lever wired to a 12VDC or 24VDC supply, so it unlocks from a card reader or panel at the head end. Standalone keypad levers such as the Delaney LP250 electronic keypad leverlock, the Emtek Classic keypad leverset, or the Lockey 2835 mechanical pushbutton keyless lever are credential-at-the-door products with no panel connection, so they suit openings where you want code entry rather than central control.
9) Do I need to specify handing for the 4780LN Augusta lever?
No. The 4700LN is non-handed and reverses in the field, so one part number covers left and right hand openings. That is useful if you are standardizing across a building and do not want to stock both hands.
10) Can I match the Augusta lever on non-electrified doors in the same building?
Yes. The Augusta lever and the 4700LN cylindrical chassis run across the series in mechanical functions as well, in the same seven-plus finish range and the same 2-3/4 inch backset, so the electrified 4780LN openings will look and feel identical to the mechanical ones on the rest of the floor. Keyed mechanical functions come with a brass 6-pin keyed-random cylinder and two keys; 7-pin is not available in this series.
11) What front and strike does the 4700LN use, and can I get a T-strike?
A 2-1/4 x 1-1/8 inch beveled front is standard, with flat fronts available to order. The standard strike is the ANSI 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inch with 1-1/4 inch lip to center, and an optional T-strike can be ordered for the 4700LN if your frame is prepped for it rather than for full ANSI.
12) I do not need electrified access control on this opening - what mechanical Grade 1 lever lock should I use instead?
The 4780LN is an electrified fail safe lever, so on a strictly mechanical opening look at a Grade 1 mechanical cylindrical lever instead. For a keyed classroom or classroom security opening, the Dexter C1000 series covers both functions as Grade 1 clutching keyed levers for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. For a non-keyed opening, the Falcon K101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty passage cylindrical lock, fire rated, with non-handed levers and a 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch door range.
13) Is a Grade 2 storeroom lever a substitute for the 4780LN on a secured opening?
They do different jobs. The 4780LN is an ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 electrified fail safe cylindrical lever that releases when power drops. A Grade 2 storeroom lever such as the Cal-Royal AG05 with deadlocking latchbolt or the Hager 2580 Withnell storeroom lever is keyed-only, with no electrical function, and both are rated Grade 2 rather than Grade 1. Use those where the opening is key-controlled and does not tie into an access system.
14) What should I order for the inactive leaf or a pull-side door where the 4780LN is on the active leaf?
The 4780LN is a working electrified latching lever, so for a non-latching leaf use a dummy trim instead. The BEST 9K series 1DT single dummy trim is a Grade 1 heavy duty non-keyed cylindrical lever dummy, which keeps the duty level consistent with a Grade 1 opening. The BEST 7KC 1DT is the Grade 2 medium duty version of the same single dummy trim.
15) What finishes does the Accentra 4780LN Augusta electrified lever come in?
Eight choices: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze equivalent, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, plus BSP black suede powder coat and WSP white suede powder coat. 626 satin chrome is the usual commercial default, and the two powder coats are the ones to look at if you are matching painted storefront or black hardware elsewhere in the building.
16) What keeps the latch from being carded or slipped on the 4780LN?
All locking functions in the 4700LN series include a guardbolt that deadlocks the 1/2 inch latchbolt once the door is closed, so the latch cannot be shimmed back with a card. The chassis itself is heavy gauge steel, die cast, zinc plated and chromated.
17) For a light-duty interior office where Grade 1 is more than we need, what lever replaces the 4780LN?
On interior openings with no access control, lower-duty keyed and non-keyed levers cover the job. The Falcon B511CP6D is a Grade 2 medium duty cylindrical lever with entry/office function, and the Hager 2525 is a Grade 2 commercial cylindrical entry lock for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. For hall and closet doors, the Falcon B101 is a Grade 2 non-handed passage lever. The 4780LN remains the choice where the door has to release on power loss.
18) Does the Augusta lever on the 4780LN match other lever designs if I am standardizing a building?
The 4780LN carries the Augusta lever design. Other commercial cylindrical levers use their own trim families that will not visually match it - the Corbin Russwin CL33903 electrified fail safe lever is furnished with the NZ lever and D rose, and Hager's 2510 and 2525 cylindrical levers use the Withnell design. If the aesthetic has to be uniform across the openings, keep the electrified and mechanical locks within one lever family rather than mixing designs.
19) Are residential Grade 3 levers an acceptable alternative to the 4780LN in a commercial building?
They are built for a different application. The 4780LN is a Grade 1 commercial cylindrical leverset. Products such as the Kwikset 200BRNL Breton passage lever and the Master Lock RL series keyed entry lever are Grade 3, and the Cal-Royal AUS00 entrance/office lever is Grade 3 as well. Those suit residential and light interior doors, not a Grade 1 access-controlled commercial opening.
