Accentra AU-5390LN-626 12V – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What does fail safe mean on the 5390LN, and what happens to the door when power drops?
Fail safe means the outside lever unlocks when power is removed. Cut power (or drop it on a fire alarm signal) and the 5390LN's outside lever gives free access; energize it and the outside lever locks. That is the configuration used on stair re-entry and on openings that have to release for egress or fire alarm control. If you need the opposite behavior, where losing power leaves the door secure, you want a fail secure electrified cylindrical lock instead, not this model.
2) Does the 5390LN run on 12 volt or 24 volt?
Both. Every finish is built in a 12VDC and a 24VDC version, so you match the lock to the power supply already feeding the opening rather than adding a converter. It is one of the two things you specify at order time along with finish.
3) Will the Accentra 5390LN latch into the strike that's already in my frame?
The latchbolt throws 1/2 inch in stainless steel, which is the normal cylindrical-lock throw, so an existing ANSI strike prep for a bored lock will generally take it. The standard strike supplied is a 1-1/4 inch curved lip sized for a 1-3/4 inch door, and other lip lengths can be ordered when the frame sits proud of the stop. All strikes are reversible, so lip direction isn't a separate part number.
4) Do I have to specify handing when ordering the 5390LN Augusta lever?
No. The 5300LN is non-handed, so one lock covers left and right hand openings. That matters if you're stocking spares for a building: one part number sits on the shelf and fits any door in the run.
5) What backset does the 5390LN come with, and can I get it for a 5 inch backset door?
It ships with the 2-3/4 inch backset, which is the usual commercial door prep. Extension links are available to order for 2-3/8 inch, 3-3/4 inch and 5 inch backsets, so wide-stile and unusual preps are covered, but those are order-time choices, not a field adjustment on the standard lock.
6) Can I use the 5390LN on a fire rated door?
Yes. The 5300LN series is UL/cUL fire-rated up to 3 hours and carries ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 2 certification. It's also Windstorm certified, subject to your local code, and ADA compliant, which is why the lever rather than a knob is specified in most institutional work.
7) What is the closest Grade 1 alternative to the Accentra 5390LN fail safe electrified cylindrical lever lock?
The Corbin Russwin CL33903 is the nearest step up. It is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified cylindrical lever lock rated for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch thick, and is offered in a 12VAC/DC version. The Accentra 5390LN is a Grade 2 electrified cylindrical lever with the Augusta lever, adjustable for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors and offered in 12VDC and 24VDC. Both give you a lever that unlocks on loss of power for an access-controlled opening; the CL33903 is built to the heavier Grade 1 cycle and strength requirements, while the 5390LN meets ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 2.
8) If the opening does not need to be tied to access control, what mechanical lever replaces an electrified 5390LN?
For a keyed opening with no power run, the Hager 2580 is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lever lock for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, and the Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. Both are key-operated only, so the door is controlled at the cylinder rather than by a 12VDC or 24VDC signal the way the 5390LN is. The 5390LN itself ships with a brass 6-pin keyed-random cylinder and two keys.
9) Is a keypad lever lock like the Delaney LP250 a substitute for a 5390LN electrified lever?
They solve different problems. The Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock, and the Lockey 2835 is a mechanical pushbutton keyless lever lock for doors 1-3/16 inch to 2 inch - both are credential-at-the-door products, where the code is entered on the lock itself. The Accentra 5390LN is an electrified cylindrical lever that takes a 12VDC or 24VDC input from a separate access control system and unlocks when power is removed. If the opening is on a card reader, panel, or fire alarm interface, the 5390LN is the lock that wires into it; a standalone keypad set does not.
10) How is the 5390LN keyed and how many pins does the cylinder have?
A brass 6-pin keyed-random cylinder with two keys is furnished as standard. 7-pin is not offered on this series, so if your facility masterkeys on a 7-pin system this is the wrong platform to standardize on. Keyed-random means each lock arrives on its own key unless you set up keying separately.
11) What finishes does the Accentra 5390LN Augusta lever come in?
Ten finishes are built in the electrified 5390LN: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, 619 satin nickel, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 693 black painted, BSP black suede powder coat and WSP white suede powder coat. Each is available in both 12VDC and 24VDC. PVD is standard on 605 and 606, which is what keeps bright brass from tarnishing in an exterior or high-touch location.
12) I only need access control on one door and don't want to run wire. What's the alternative to an electrified lever lock?
An electrified lock like the 5390LN needs 12VDC or 24VDC power run to the opening plus an electric hinge or door loop. If you're doing a single door and don't want to pull wire, a standalone keypad leverset does the job without power: the Delaney LP250 is an electronic keypad leverlock in Grade 2, and Lockey's mechanical keypad levers such as the 1150 need no power or batteries at all and fit doors 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch. You lose central control and fire alarm release, which is exactly what the 5390LN is for.
13) Is the 5390LN suitable for a lead-lined door in an imaging suite?
No. Lead shielding is not offered on the 5300LN series, so it can't be used where the lock body itself has to be shielded, such as an X-ray or imaging room door. Spec a lock line that offers a lead-lined option for those openings.
14) What lever should be used on the non-secured doors in the same run as the 5390LN so the levers match?
On a corridor where only some openings are access controlled, the unsecured doors take a non-keyed lever of the same grade. The Falcon B101 is a Grade 2 medium duty cylindrical passage lever with a non-handed design, and the Hager 2510 is a Grade 2 passage cylindrical lever for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. The Accentra 5390LN is also non-handed, so a mixed run does not require handing to be called out on either the electrified or the passage openings.
15) Can a Grade 3 residential lever such as the Kwikset 200BRNL be used in place of a 5390LN on a commercial opening?
No - they are built to different duty classes. The Kwikset 200BRNL Breton is a Grade 3 passage lever set for doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch, and the Cal-Royal AUS00 is a Grade 3 entrance/office lever for the same thickness range; neither is keyed to an access control input. The Accentra 5390LN is a Grade 2 commercial electrified cylindrical lever, UL/cUL fire rated up to 3 hours and ADA compliant, for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch. Where the drawing calls for a fire-rated commercial opening tied to access control, a Grade 3 residential passage or entrance set does not meet it.
16) What is the difference between the Accentra 5390LN and the Corbin Russwin CL3110 for a cylindrical lever on a fire-rated door?
The Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a Grade 1 vandal resistant passage/closet cylindrical lever in the CL3100 series, fire rated, for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch - it is non-keyed and has no electrical function, so it free-swings from both sides. The Accentra 5390LN covers the same 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch door range and is UL/cUL fire rated up to 3 hours, but it is a keyed, electrified Grade 2 lever that releases on loss of power. Choose by whether the opening needs to be controlled at all: the CL3110 is for a door that only needs a latch, the 5390LN for one on an access control circuit.
17) For a classroom opening, what takes the place of a 5390LN fail safe lever?
Classroom openings are usually specified with a dedicated classroom function rather than an electrified fail safe lever. The Dexter C1000 is a Grade 1 keyed classroom cylindrical lever with clutching for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and there is a Grade 1 classroom security version in the same series for the same door range; the Cal-Royal AG03 is a classroom lever in the AG series. The Accentra 5390LN is instead an electrified Grade 2 lever for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch that unlocks when power drops, which is what you want when the opening must release on a fire alarm or panel command rather than be locked down with a key.
18) Is the guardbolt on the 5390LN enough to stop the latch being carded?
The guardbolt deadlocks the latchbolt whenever the door is closed, and it's standard on all locking functions in the series. That's what prevents the latch being shimmed or loided on a secured opening. It's a deadlocking latch, not a deadbolt, so it doesn't replace an auxiliary deadbolt where the spec calls for one.
19) How rugged is the 5390LN chassis for a high-traffic corridor?
The mechanism is heavy-gauge steel, zinc-plated and dichromated for corrosion resistance, and the lock is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 2. Grade 2 is the middle commercial tier: fine for offices, multi-family corridors and light institutional traffic. For a school entrance or a heavily abused opening, step to a Grade 1 cylindrical such as the Corbin Russwin CL3100 series.
20) Will a dummy lever trim work as the inactive half opposite a 5390LN?
A dummy trim is a pull only - it has no latch and no electrical connection. The BEST 7KC single dummy trim cylindrical lever is Grade 2 medium duty, and the BEST 9K 1DT single dummy trim is Grade 1 heavy duty; the Callan Bentley is a Grade 2 dummy lever. Any of these can dress an inactive leaf so the lever appearance carries across a pair, but the latching and the 12VDC or 24VDC control still have to come from the 5390LN on the active leaf.
