Accentra MO-5390LN-626 12V – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the Yale 5390LN a fail safe or fail secure electrified lever lock?
Fail safe. The 5390LN Monroe electrified cylindrical lever unlocks when power is removed, so the outside lever is free on a power drop. That is the configuration you want on egress-path doors tied to a fire alarm release. If your spec calls for the opening to stay locked when power drops, this is the wrong device and you need a fail secure electrified cylindrical lock instead.
2) Will the Yale 5390LN fit a 1-3/4 inch commercial door?
Yes. The 5300LN chassis adjusts from 1-3/4 to 2 inches as standard, which covers the usual commercial hollow metal or solid core leaf. Thicker or thinner leaves are handled by ordering the lock built for 2-1/4 inch doors. The front is universal, so it drops onto either a flat or beveled door edge without a separate part.
3) What backset does the Yale 5390LN come with, and can it work in a 2-3/8 inch prep?
Standard backset is 2-3/4 inches. If the door is already bored at 2-3/8, order the 2-3/8 extension link; 3-3/4 and 5 inch links are also available for wide stile or narrow light openings. The link is an order option, so specify it up front rather than expecting to adapt it on site.
4) Can the Yale 5390LN be used on a fire rated door?
It is UL/cUL fire rated up to 3 hours and certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.2, Series 4000, Grade 2. It is also windstorm certified, subject to your local code, and ADA compliant, which matters for lever operation on accessible routes. One caution for electrified openings: a fail safe lock on a fire door assembly has to be released through the fire alarm system per your local authority, not left unlocked at will.
5) Will the Yale 5390LN latch into the strike already in my frame?
The latchbolt is stainless steel with a 1/2 inch throw, and the standard strike is a 1-1/4 inch curved lip sized for a 1-3/4 inch door. A 1/2 inch throw is the normal cylindrical lock throw, so an existing ANSI strike pocket usually takes it, but lip length has to match your frame reveal, and other lip lengths are available to order. A guardbolt deadlocks the latchbolt once the door closes, which is what keeps the latch from being carded.
6) I need access control on a door but have no wiring to it. Is the 5390LN the right lock?
No. The 5390LN is an electrified lock, so it needs power run to the opening through a door loop or electric hinge to work at all. Where there is no power available, a standalone keypad lever is the practical route: the Lockey 2835 mechanical pushbutton keyless lever covers 1-3/16 to 2 inch doors with no wiring, and the Delaney LP250 electronic keypad leverlock is a Grade 2 battery style option. Both control access without a power supply or access control panel.
7) What is the closest equivalent to the Accentra 5390LN fail safe electrified lever lock from another manufacturer?
The Corbin Russwin CL33903 is the nearest match. It is a fail safe electrified cylindrical lever lock offered in a 12VAC/DC version and fits doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch. The 5390LN is a Grade 2 electrified cylindrical lever in the 5300 Series with the Monroe lever, ordered in 12VDC or 24VDC. The CL33903 is certified ANSI/BHMA Grade 1, so if the opening is specified Grade 1 the Corbin Russwin is the one that meets it; if the spec calls for Grade 2 the 5390LN covers it directly.
8) The opening is specified ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 - what cylindrical levers meet that instead of the 5390LN?
The Accentra 5390LN is certified Grade 2. Grade 1 cylindrical levers in the same bored prep include the Corbin Russwin CL3110 passage/closet vandal resistant lever, fire rated, for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch; the Falcon K101 Grade 1 passage lock with non-handed levers, fire rated, for 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch doors; and the Dexter C1000 Grade 1 classroom lever for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. If the Grade 1 opening also has to be electrified, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is the Grade 1 fail safe lever.
9) Do I have to specify handing when ordering a Yale 5390LN lever lock?
No. The 5300LN chassis is non-handed, so one lock covers left and right hand openings. The strike is reversible too, which is why a property manager stocking spares for a building only has to carry one part number per finish and voltage.
10) What cylinder and keys come with the Yale 5390LN lever lock?
A brass 6-pin keyed random cylinder with two keys is furnished as standard. 7-pin is not offered on this series, so if your facility is keyed on a 7-pin master system, this chassis will not take your existing core and you should look at a series that accepts your keying. For a keyed alike or master keyed set, the keying has to be specified with the order rather than swapped later.
11) Can I put the Yale 5390LN on every door in the building and just wire the ones I need?
Not economically. The 5390LN is the electrified version of the 5300LN chassis, so on openings that need no access control you would pay for a solenoid you never wire. Standard practice is to run the electrified lock only at the controlled openings and use mechanical locks of the same grade elsewhere. Comparable Grade 2 mechanical cylindrical levers include the Hager 2580 storeroom and Hager 2525 entry, both listed for 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal AG05 Grade 2 storeroom lever with a deadlocking latchbolt.
12) Is a cylindrical electrified lever like the 5390LN strong enough for a school or hospital corridor door?
The 5390LN is Grade 2, with a heavy gauge steel mechanism, zinc plated and dichromated for corrosion resistance. Grade 2 handles normal commercial traffic. For an abusive institutional corridor where Grade 1 is written into the spec, step up to a Grade 1 cylindrical lever such as the Corbin Russwin CL33903 fail safe electrified lever for controlled openings, or the Corbin Russwin CL3110 vandal resistant Grade 1 passage lock where no access control is needed.
13) Can the Yale 5390LN be used in an X-ray or radiology room?
No. Lead shielding is not offered on the 5300LN series, so it should not be specified for a lead lined radiology or imaging door where the opening has to maintain the shielding envelope. Every other institutional application the series covers is fine; it is only the lead lined opening that needs a different chassis.
14) I need a fail safe electrified lever with a specific lever style and rose - what else is available?
The Corbin Russwin CL33903 is also built with the NZ lever and D rose in a 12AC/DC fail safe configuration, Grade 1, for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch. The Accentra 5390LN carries the Monroe lever design. Both are electrified cylindrical locks, so the choice comes down to the lever and rose appearance you are matching on the rest of the openings and which ANSI grade the door is specified to.
15) I only need the interior door to latch - do I need an electrified lock like the 5390LN?
No. For a hall, closet, or interior door with no locking requirement, a passage lever is the simpler part: the Falcon B101 is a Grade 2 non-handed cylindrical passage lever, the Hager 2510 is a Grade 2 passage cylindrical lever with the Withnell design for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, and the Design Hardware J75 is a Grade 2 passage lever lockset with a flat lever for 1-3/4 inch doors. Save the Accentra 5390LN for the openings actually tied into access control.
16) Can I use a residential grade lever on a commercial opening instead of the 5390LN?
Levers like the Kwikset 200BRNL Breton passage and 300BRNL Breton privacy are Grade 3 for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and the Cal-Royal AUS00 entrance/office lever is Grade 3 for the same range. The Accentra 5390LN is a commercial Grade 2 lock. On a commercial corridor, stairwell, or tenant door carrying the traffic those see, the Grade 2 or Grade 1 certified locks are the ones written into commercial specifications; the Grade 3 levers suit light residential and interior use.
17) What should I use for a classroom or storeroom door that does not need to be electrified?
The Cal-Royal AG03 is a classroom lever in the AG Series with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different and a 2-3/4 inch backset. For a storeroom function, the Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever with a deadlocking latchbolt and the Hager 2580 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. All three are keyed mechanical locks, so the room is controlled at the key rather than at an access control panel the way the electrified Accentra 5390LN is.
18) My door is 1-3/8 inch thick - can I still use the Accentra 5390LN?
The 5390LN adjusts from 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch as furnished, with 1-3/8 inch and 2-1/4 inch versions available to order. If you would rather take a lock that covers 1-3/8 inch off the shelf, the Hager 2525 Grade 2 entry lever and Hager 2510 Grade 2 passage lever both cover 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, the Dexter C1000 entry/office Grade 1 lever covers 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and the Falcon K101 Grade 1 passage lock covers 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch. Those are mechanical locks, so confirm the opening does not need the electrified release first.
19) What finishes does the Yale 5390LN Monroe lever come in?
Ten finishes are orderable on the electrified 5390LN: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze equivalent, 619 satin nickel, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 693 black painted, BSP black suede powder coat and WSP white suede powder coat. 605 and 606 are PVD as standard, so the brass holds up on an exterior or high traffic opening rather than dulling. For matching existing openings in a building, 626 satin chrome is the usual commercial default.
20) What is a comparable lever lock for a behavioral health or detention type room?
For those rooms the function changes rather than the electrification. The Dexter C1000 is a Grade 1 cylindrical lock in asylum function (F87) for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, and the Arrow MK33-BD-CS is a Grade 2 heavy duty asylum/institution/utility lock with a conventional cylinder in the Schlage C keyway. Those give key control on both sides with no free-egress lever, which is the opposite of what a fail safe electrified lock like the Accentra 5390LN does when power drops.
