The YA193 indicator kit is built for Yale 8800 Series mortise locks fitted with sectional (rose) trim, and it includes the prep for a mortise cylinder, so it suits keyed functions. Specific functions called out are 8802, 8820, 8827, 8862 and 8864 (outside). If your 8800 has escutcheon trim rather than sectional trim, this is not the kit. The lock itself is not included, this is a trim upgrade only.
2) Do I need two indicator kits to show status on both sides of the door?
Yes. Each kit covers one side only, containing a single indicator plate with mechanism, screw pack, plastic template and instructions. The YA193 is the outside trim indicator, so if you want the status readable from the corridor and from inside the room, order two kits, one for each side.
3) Does the YA193 indicator fit a 1-3/4 inch door?
Standard kits are made for 1-3/4 inch (44mm) doors, which is the usual commercial thickness. Kits for thicker doors are available on request, so if you are working on a heavier leaf, specify the thickness rather than assuming the standard kit will make up the difference.
4) Do I have to order the indicator kit by handing, or can I flip it in the field?
Handing is selectable at order, left or right. The kit is also field reversible: it ships set right hand and can be changed to left hand during install, so a mis-handed opening does not mean a return. For a school or hospital doing a floor at a time, that means one carton of kits can cover mixed handing.
5) What indicator wording and color options are there for a classroom versus a restroom?
Six display codes are offered. V10 reads Unlocked/Locked in green/red and V40 the same wording in white/red, which is what most classroom security doors use. V20 (green/red) and V50 (white/red) read Vacant/Occupied, the usual choice for restrooms, lactation rooms and patient rooms. V30 and V60 are icons only, green/red and white/red, for facilities that want no English text.
6) Can I get the lock indicator engraved with instructions for users?
Engraving is a required selection on the YA193 kit. You can take None, or EMA which engraves the outside with "Lock" and an arrow, or EMB which puts that same "Lock" with arrow engraving on the inside. Facilities doing lockdown training often specify the engraving so occupants know which way to turn under stress.
7) Is this indicator kit strong enough for a high traffic school or hospital corridor?
It is built to ANSI/BHMA Grade 1, the heavy duty commercial rating, and is a commercial product rather than residential. Plates are brass, bronze or stainless steel depending on the finish ordered, so the trim itself is metal, not a plastic overlay with a metal look.

Yes. The outside plate comes with cylinder prep for a standard mortise cylinder, which is why it pairs with keyed functions like 8827 and 8862. Staff keying stays intact, the indicator just adds a readable lock status beside it. The cylinder is not part of the kit.
