1) Will the ACSI 1550K-MDC latch retraction kit work on my Corbin Russwin ED4000 exit device?
Yes. The 1550K-MDC is the version of ACSI's motorized latch retraction modification built for Corbin Russwin ED4000 and ED5000 devices, plus Yale 7000. If your device is a Von Duprin, Sargent, Precision, Falcon, Dorma, Hager, Dorex or Design Hardware unit, you need a different suffix in the 1550K family, not the MDC.
2) Does the ACSI 1550K-MDC kit come with the exit device, or do I supply my own?
You supply the exit device. ACSI supplies the UL Listed modification itself, along with design assistance, wiring diagrams and technical support. So the order is: your Corbin Russwin ED4000/ED5000 or Yale 7000 device, plus this kit, plus a power supply. Installation can be done in the field or at the factory.
3) What power supply do I need for an ACSI 1550K-MDC motor latch retraction kit?
The kit runs on 24 VDC with a quiet continuous-duty motor and low power draw, and ACSI recommends its own Series 1400 power supplies to feed it. Leads are non-polarized, so you don't have to chase polarity at the terminal. Budget for the power supply as a separate line item, it isn't part of the kit.
4) Can I use electric latch retraction on a fire rated exit device?
This ACSI modification is UL Listed for both panic and fire exit hardware, so it can go on a fire rated opening as well as a standard panic opening. One caution on fire doors: the kit also motorizes dogging, and mechanical dogging is not permitted on fire exit hardware, so on a fire rated door you use the retraction function and leave the door latched.
5) Does the 1550K-MDC fit rim devices only, or vertical rod and mortise too?
All four chassis types. The 1550K modification fits mortise, rim, concealed vertical rod and surface vertical rod devices, so a building running a mix of rim devices on singles and vertical rod devices on pairs can electrify both with the same kit family, as long as the devices are Corbin Russwin ED4000/ED5000 or Yale 7000.
6) Do I have to replace my exit devices to add electric latch retraction to existing doors?
No. The 1550K-MDC is a modification to the device you already have on the door, not a new device, so an existing Corbin Russwin ED4000 or ED5000 or Yale 7000 opening can be electrified without changing the door prep, trim or the device itself. That is what makes this the retrofit route for a building standardized on those devices.
7) What is the difference between motor latch retraction and a solenoid latch retraction kit?
The MDC is a motorized retraction modification: a continuous-duty motor pulls the latch, which runs quiet and draws far less current than a solenoid, so the power supply and wire sizing get easier. ACSI's solenoid alternative in the same family is the 1550K-VD, and that one is for Von Duprin 33/35 and 98/99 devices. For Corbin Russwin and Yale, the motorized MDC is the path.
8) Can I tie an ACSI 1550K latch retraction kit into the fire alarm or access control system?
Yes, it's built to interface with life safety systems, which is how you get the latches to drop back in on an alarm signal. On board diagnostic LEDs let a technician see the board state at the door instead of guessing, and auto retry handles a cycle that doesn't complete on the first attempt.
9) I have Von Duprin 99 devices, not Corbin Russwin. Which ACSI kit do I order?
Not the MDC. For Von Duprin 33A/35A/98/99 the motorized version is the ACSI 1550K-MDV, and the 22 series takes the 1550K-MDV22. There is also a solenoid option, the 1550K-VD, for Von Duprin 33/35 and 98/99. Ordering the MDC for a Von Duprin device gets you a modification that will not mount.
10) Is the ACSI 1550K-MDC a commercial grade product, and is there more than one version to choose from?
Commercial only, and there is a single configuration: model 1550K-MDC. Nothing to spec on handing, finish or size, because the modification goes inside the exit device you supply. Your ordering decisions are which device family you have (this one is the Corbin Russwin ED4000/ED5000 and Yale 7000 kit) and the power supply that feeds it.
