ACSI ACSI-ACND80JDEU ATH 626 12V – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What happens to the ACSI ACND80JDEU lock if the power goes out?
It locks. The ACND80JDEU is a fail secure (power unlock) lock: outside trim is unlocked while power is applied and locked when power is removed, so a power failure leaves the outside lever locked. If you need the opposite behavior on a stair tower or egress path, you want the fail safe version instead, where the outside trim unlocks on power loss and the door behaves as passage.
2) Can someone still get in with a key when the ACSI 1500 Series electric lock is electrically locked?
Yes, when a key cylinder is installed in the lock the latchbolt can be momentarily retracted with the key even though the lock is electrically locked. The reverse is not true: a lock that is electrically unlocked cannot be locked again with the key cylinder. That matters if your access control system holds the door unlocked on a schedule.
3) What cylinder does the ACSI ACND80JDEU take?
It is prepped for a Schlage full size interchangeable core (FSIC). The cylinder is not the same prep as a 7-pin small format interchangeable core, so if your building is keyed on SFIC cores you need the SFIC-prepped model (ACND80BDEU) rather than this one.
4) Is the ACND80JDEU handed, or do I need to specify left or right?
No handing to specify. The lever is reversible, so one part number covers both left and right hand openings. You do pick the lever style when ordering: Athens, Omega, Rhodes, Sparta, or Tubular.
5) What do I have to specify when ordering an ACSI 1500 Series electric cylindrical lock?
Four choices: voltage (12V or 24V), whether you want a request-to-exit switch (RX) or no switch, lever style (Athens, Omega, Rhodes, Sparta, Tubular), and finish. On solenoid-controlled locks the fail safe or fail secure behavior and the voltage must be specified at order time, they are not field selectable the way the motor-controlled lock bodies are.
6) Does this ACSI lock run on batteries, or does it need to be wired?
It is hard wired. There is no battery option on the ACND80JDEU, so the opening needs power run to the lock, typically through an electric hinge or power transfer, plus a supply matched to the voltage you order (12VAC/DC or 24VAC/DC). The solenoids are continuous duty, so they can stay energized.
7) I need a fail safe version instead of fail secure - what should I order?
The ACND80JDEU is the fail secure build, which locks when power is removed. For the same storeroom cylindrical lock in fail safe with a request-to-exit switch and Schlage FSIC prep, the ACSI ACND80JDEL is the matching part. If no cylinder prep is needed at the opening, the ACND80LDEU (fail secure) and ACND80LDEL (fail safe) cover it, and the Vandlgard clutched-lever versions are the ACND96 equivalents.
8) What if the door uses small format interchangeable cores rather than Schlage cylinders?
The ACND80JDEU is prepped for a Schlage full-size interchangeable core. For a 7-pin SFIC prep on the same Grade 1 storeroom electric cylindrical lock, the ACSI ACND80BDEU is the fail secure version and the ACND80BDEL is the fail safe version with a request-to-exit switch. Keying prep is the only difference to resolve here, so match it to the core system already in the building.
9) Is this lock strong enough for a high traffic stairwell or storeroom door?
It is a Grade 1 commercial cylindrical lockset, the heaviest duty ANSI/BHMA grade, and the 1500 Series was built for stair tower doors and controlled areas where the door must both lock and latch while still meeting life safety codes. Storeroom function means the outside lever is always locked mechanically and the inside lever always retracts the latch for free egress.
10) How do I get a door position or exit signal back to my access control panel with this lock?
Order the RX switch option. The ACND80JDEU is offered with or without a request-to-exit switch, and ACSI lists security monitoring, authorized egress (request to exit) and interfacing with life safety systems among the available options on the 1500 Series. The RX switch is what tells the panel the inside lever was operated so the alarm is not tripped on a legitimate exit.
11) Is the ACSI ACND80JDEU Buy American compliant for a government project?
Yes, it is listed as BAA qualified, which is what federal and many state agency specs ask for. ACSI also states the 1500 Series electric locks are UL Listed modifications to standard manufacturers' locksets.
12) Should I use an electrified cylindrical lock or an electric mortise lock on this opening?
Cylindrical is the choice when the door is already bored for a standard 161 cylindrical prep and you are retrofitting existing openings, which is most stair and storeroom doors in commercial buildings. Go mortise when the door has a mortise pocket or the spec calls for one. ACSI covers both: the 1500 Series is offered in mortise and cylindrical, and the electric mortise lock bodies are stocked in Schlage, Corbin Russwin, Sargent, Yale, Best and Falcon preps.
13) What else is an electrified cylindrical lockset besides the ACSI ACND80JDEU?
The DynaLock ECL-1 is also an electrified cylindrical lockset. The ACSI ACND80JDEU is a Grade 1 storeroom-function cylindrical electric lock with a reversible lever, hard wired, prepped for a Schlage full-size interchangeable core, and ordered in 12V or 24V with or without a request-to-exit switch. Compare the two on the cylinder prep and the lever style you need, since the ACND80JDEU is offered in Athens, Omega, Rhodes, Sparta and Tubular levers.
14) Do I need a keyed cylinder at all if the door is only used for egress?
No. For an exit-only opening, ACSI offers the ACND12DEU (fail secure) and ACND12DEL (fail safe) Grade 1 electric cylindrical locks with reversible lever at 12VAC/DC, with no outside cylinder prep. The ACND80JDEU is the storeroom-function choice when the outside lever must be key-released through a Schlage FSIC cylinder.
15) Which option holds up better on an abuse-prone door than the ACND80JDEU?
For openings where the lever takes abuse, the ACSI ACND96JDEU is the Vandlgard version of the same Grade 1 storeroom electric cylindrical lock with reversible lever, fail secure, 12VAC/DC and Schlage FSIC prep. The Vandlgard lever moves freely when locked instead of transmitting force to the latch. Function, prep and voltage otherwise line up with the ACND80JDEU.
16) Can I use just an electric lock body instead of a complete lockset?
Yes, if the existing lock chassis is being retained. ACSI stocks the ACL9080EU/EL electric lock body at 12/24VAC/DC with field-selectable fail safe or fail secure and a connector, and the ACL9080EU/EL-RX adds a request-to-exit switch. The ACND80JDEU is the complete cylindrical lockset with lever, offered in eight finishes and five lever styles.
17) Will this ACSI lock match the finishes on the rest of my building's doors?
Eight finishes are offered: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil-rubbed satin bronze, 619 satin nickel, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, and 643E aged bronze powder finish. Those are standard BHMA finish numbers, so you can match them against the closers and exit devices already on your openings by number rather than by eye.
