ACSI ACSI-ACND96LDEU ATH 626 12V – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What happens to the ACSI ACND96LDEU lock if the power drops?
It locks. The ACND96LDEU is the fail secure (power unlock) build: outside trim is unlocked while power is applied and locked when power is removed, so a power failure leaves the door secured. If you need the opposite behavior, where the outside lever frees up on power loss, order the fail safe version (ACND96LDEL) instead.
2) Does the ACSI ACND96LDEU come with a key cylinder?
No. It ships less cylinder, so you supply and install the cylinder to match your keying. Once a cylinder is in, the key will momentarily retract the latchbolt even when the lock is electrically locked. Note the limitation: if the lock is electrically unlocked, the key cannot override it back to locked.
3) Is the ACND96LDEU lock hardwired or battery powered?
Hardwired. Power is run to the lock, with continuous duty solenoid operation, and there is no battery pack to maintain. Orderable at 12V or 24V, AC or DC. Because power has to reach the lock leaf, plan on a door loop or an electric hinge/transfer device as part of the install.
4) Do I have to order the ACND96LDEU handed for left or right doors?
No handing to specify. The lever is reversible, so one lock covers left and right hand openings and you can set it in the field.
5) What do I need to decide before ordering an ACSI 1500 Series electric cylindrical lock?
Four things. Voltage (12V or 24V), whether you want a request-to-exit switch built in (RX) or none, lever style (Athens, Omega, Rhodes, Sparta or Tubular), and finish. Fail secure versus fail safe is fixed by the model, since these are solenoid controlled locks and that has to be specified rather than field selected. You also need to source the cylinder separately.
6) Will the ACND96LDEU signal my access control panel when someone exits from the inside?
Only if you order it with the RX option. The request-to-exit switch is an orderable switch type on this lock, and it reports inside lever rotation so the panel can shunt an alarm or log the egress. Order it with switch type NONE and you get no monitoring contact. Security monitoring and life safety system interface are also available on the 1500 Series.
7) Can a stairtower door use an electric storeroom lock like this and still meet life safety codes?
That is what the 1500 Series is built for. It allows remote electric locking and unlocking of stairtower doors and controlled areas where both locking and latching are required, while conforming to life safety codes, and it can interface with life safety systems for release on alarm. Free egress from the inside is retained because the inside lever always retracts the latch in storeroom function.
8) I need small format interchangeable core or Schlage full size cylinder prep. Does the ACND96LDEU have it?
The plain L version takes a standard cylinder and ships less cylinder. If you are standardizing on cores, order the prep-specific siblings instead: the ACND96BDEU is prepped for a 7-pin SFIC, and the ACND96JDEU is prepped for a Schlage FSIC. All three are the same Vandlgard fail secure 12VAC/DC storeroom lock otherwise.
9) What is the closest alternative to the ACSI ACND96LDEU electrified cylindrical lock from another manufacturer?
The DynaLock ECL-1 is the comparable part, an electrified cylindrical lockset built for the same job of remotely controlling a bored lock opening. The ACSI ACND96LDEU is a Grade 1 cylindrical storeroom lock with a lever handle, hard wired rather than battery powered, and ordered in a fail secure 12VAC/DC configuration. If your access control drawing calls for a specific electrical function, voltage, or lever design, confirm the DynaLock ECL-1 is offered in that configuration before you swap, because the ACND96LDEU is the one specified down to lever style, finish, voltage and request to exit switch.
10) What does Vandlgard mean on this ACSI storeroom lock, and is it worth it for a high-abuse door?
Vandlgard is the clutched lever design: when the lock is secure, the outside lever rotates freely instead of transmitting force into the lock internals, so someone hanging on or kicking the lever does not break the mechanism. That is why it gets specified for school corridors, stairtowers, dorms and public restroom entries. The non-Vandlgard equivalent in the same family is the ACND80LDEU if the door does not see that kind of abuse.
11) Is this ACSI lock Grade 1 and UL Listed for a commercial opening?
Yes on both. The ACND96LDEU is a Grade 1 commercial cylindrical lockset, and ACSI's electrified modifications are UL Listed. It is also flagged BAA qualified, which matters on federally funded work.
12) What is an alternative to the ACSI ACND96LDEU if I just need an electrified cylindrical lockset?
The DynaLock ECL-1 electrified cylindrical lockset is the other electrified cylindrical option we carry. The ACSI is the one to specify when you need Grade 1 storeroom function with the Vandlgard clutched lever, a defined 12V or 24V fail secure solenoid, a choice of five lever designs, and an optional built-in request-to-exit switch.
13) Should I use an electric cylindrical lock or an electric mortise lock on my controlled door?
Go cylindrical when the door is already bored for a cylindrical lockset, which is most standard commercial doors, and you want the simpler retrofit. Go mortise when the door has a mortise pocket or you need the heavier lock body. ACSI covers both in the 1500 Series, and stocks electric mortise lock bodies in Schlage, Corbin Russwin, Sargent, Yale, Best and Falcon. One more difference: mortise and motor-controlled locks are field selectable fail safe or fail secure, while a solenoid-controlled lock like the ACND96LDEU is fixed as ordered.
14) I need a 24V version or a request to exit switch instead of straight fail secure 12V. Do I have to change brands?
No. The ACSI ACND96LDEU is configured across both 12V and 24V, and with either no switch or an RX request to exit switch, so voltage and monitoring changes are handled within the same Grade 1 cylindrical storeroom lock rather than by moving to a different manufacturer. Switching to the DynaLock ECL-1 electrified cylindrical lockset would mean re-verifying the electrical function against the ECL-1 series, so if the only change is voltage or RX, staying with the ACND96LDEU keeps the rest of the specification intact.
15) Will a DynaLock ECL-1 match the lever and finish of the ACSI locks already on my stairtower doors?
Do not assume it will. The ACSI ACND96LDEU is offered in Athens, Omega, Rhodes, Sparta and Tubular levers and in finishes including 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 satin bronze oil-rubbed, 619 satin nickel, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome and 643E aged bronze, so matching an existing run of doors is straightforward within that part number. The DynaLock ECL-1 is an electrified cylindrical lockset and its lever and finish offering is its own; if visual consistency across the building matters, ordering additional ACND96LDEU units in the same lever and finish is the direct path.
16) Is a standard mechanical storeroom lever a valid substitute for the ACND96LDEU?
Only if the opening does not need remote control. The ACND96LDEU is an electronic, hard wired storeroom lock, meaning the outside lever is released or secured by the access control system at 12VAC/DC in the fail secure arrangement. A non-electrified storeroom lever gives you the same key-and-lever behavior but no interface to the system, so it will not satisfy a drawing that calls for remote locking or unlocking. If you do need the electrical function and are cross-shopping, the DynaLock ECL-1 electrified cylindrical lockset is the peer product in that role.
17) My project has a Buy American requirement. Does that affect which electrified cylindrical lock I can use?
It can. The ACSI ACND96LDEU is BAA qualified, so it can be submitted on federal and other jobs carrying that requirement while still meeting a Grade 1 commercial specification. If you are considering the DynaLock ECL-1 electrified cylindrical lockset as an alternate, confirm its domestic-content status with the submittal before substitution, since that qualification is what lets the ACND96LDEU clear the requirement.
18) What finishes does the ACSI ACND96LDEU electric lock come in to match the rest of my openings?
Eight: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil-rubbed satin bronze, 619 satin nickel, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, and 643E aged bronze. For a building already standardized on satin chrome lever hardware, 626 is the match; 613 is the one to pick against dark bronze trim.
