ACSI ACSI-ACND80PDEU ATH 626 12V – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What happens to the ACSI ACND80PDEU lock when the power goes out?
The ACND80PDEU is a fail secure electric lock: outside trim is unlocked while power is applied and locked when power is removed, so it locks on a power failure. The inside lever always retracts the latch for free egress, and if a key cylinder is fitted, the latchbolt can be momentarily retracted with a key even while the lock is electrically locked. If you need the opposite behavior (unlocked on power loss, passage function during an outage), that is the fail safe version, ACND80PDEL, not this one.
2) Is a fail secure electric lock allowed on a stair tower door, or do I need fail safe?
Stair tower doors are exactly what the ACSI Series 1500 electric locks are built for. They provide locking and latching for stairtower doors and controlled areas, and allow remote electric locking or unlocking while conforming to life-safety codes. Fail secure means the door stays locked from the stair side on power loss while the inside lever still lets people out of the stair into the floor only if that side is the free side, so confirm which side of the opening must stay openable. If your code official requires the door to release to the corridor on power loss, order the fail safe ACND80PDEL instead. Authorized Egress (request to exit) and interface with life-safety systems are available options on the Series 1500 locks.
3) What voltage does the ACSI ACND80PDEU electric cylindrical lock need?
The ACND80PDEU is ordered in either 12V or 24V, and it runs on AC or DC at the voltage you specify. It is a solenoid-controlled lock, which means the voltage and the fail secure operation are both fixed at time of order, not set in the field. The continuous duty solenoid is meant to be energized for long periods. It is hard wired, with no batteries involved, so power has to be transferred to the door leaf.
4) Do I need to order a request to exit switch with the ACND80PDEU, or is it built in?
Request to exit is an ordering choice on the ACND80PDEU. The switch type is specified as either NONE or RX, so if your access control panel needs to see the inside lever being turned (to shunt an alarm or unlock a mag on a companion door), you order the RX version. Security monitoring and Authorized Egress are options on the Series 1500 line rather than standard equipment, so an RX switch cannot be assumed on a lock that was ordered without it.
5) Is the ACSI ACND80PDEU a Grade 1 lock, and is it UL listed?
Grade 1 and UL Listed, both stated for the ACND80PDEU. ACSI's business is UL Listed electrical modifications to other manufacturers' locksets, so the electrified lock carries that listing. It is a commercial cylindrical (bored) lockset in storeroom function, and it is BAA qualified, which matters if you are buying for a federal or federally funded project with domestic sourcing requirements.
6) I use small format interchangeable core, or Schlage full size cores. Which ACSI electric cylindrical lock do I order?
Cylinder prep is chosen by model in the ACSI cylindrical line, not as an option on one part number. The ACND80PDEU is supplied with a C keyway key-in-lever cylinder. If you key your building on 7-pin SFIC, order the ACND80BDEU, which is the same Grade 1 storeroom fail secure lock with 7-pin SFIC prep. For Schlage full size interchangeable core, the ACND80JDEU carries Schlage FSIC prep. Getting this wrong is the most common way one of these comes back, since the prep cannot be changed after the fact.
7) What is the closest equivalent to the ACSI ACND80PDEU electric cylindrical lock from another manufacturer?
The DynaLock ECL-1 is an electrified cylindrical lockset and is the nearest peer in the same part class as the ACSI ACND80PDEU. The ACND80PDEU is a Grade 1 cylindrical storeroom lock, hard wired rather than battery operated, and is ordered with the lever style, finish, voltage and switch option selected at time of order. The ECL-1 is identified by DynaLock as its ECL-1 series electrified cylindrical lockset. Confirm lever style and finish requirements against your existing door hardware before substituting, since the two are catalogued under different series designations.
8) For a federal or public agency job with Buy American requirements, which electrified cylindrical lock should be specified?
The ACSI ACND80PDEU is BAA qualified, which is the deciding factor on procurement that carries a Buy American Act clause. It is a Grade 1 commercial cylindrical storeroom lock, hard wired, available in 12V or 24V and in eight finishes from bright brass through satin chrome and aged bronze. The DynaLock ECL-1 electrified cylindrical lockset covers the same type of opening, so where the contract does not carry a BAA clause it remains a candidate; where it does, the ACND80PDEU is the one that answers the question directly.
9) How does storeroom function work on an electrified lock like the ACND80PDEU?
Storeroom function means the outside lever is always locked and the latch is retracted only by key or by the electric release; the inside lever always retracts the latch for egress. On the ACND80PDEU that combines with fail secure operation, so applying power unlocks the outside lever and removing power relocks it. One behavior to plan around: a lock that has been electrically unlocked cannot be relocked with the key cylinder. The key retracts the latch, it does not override the electric state.
10) Which lever styles and finishes can I get on the ACSI ACND80PDEU?
Five lever designs are offered on the ACND80PDEU: Athens, Omega, Rhodes, Sparta and Tubular. Finishes are 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil-rubbed satin bronze, 619 satin nickel, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, and 643E aged bronze. If you are matching an existing set of openings in a building, pick the lever family and finish first, since those are what a walk-by comparison shows, then match the electrical spec (voltage, RX or not) to the access control side.
11) What is the difference between the ACSI ACND80PDEU and the ACND96PDEU Vandlgard version?
Both are Grade 1 storeroom electric cylindrical locks in the same ACSI family, but the 96 series is the Vandlgard version, built so the outside lever moves freely when locked instead of resisting force, which is what you want on a door that takes abuse (dorms, stair towers open to the public, back-of-house corridors). The ACND80PDEU is the standard storeroom lever. Both are offered in fail secure form; the fail safe counterparts are the ACND80PDEL and ACND96PDEL.
12) Should I use an electrified cylindrical lock or an electric mortise lock for a controlled access door?
An electrified cylindrical lock like the ACND80PDEU installs into a standard bored door prep, which makes it the lighter retrofit on an existing door that already has a cylindrical lockset. ACSI's Series 1500 covers both, and the mortise side is where you go when the door is already prepped for a mortise body or the opening needs a mortise-grade lock; ACSI stocks electric mortise lock bodies in Schlage, Corbin Russwin, Sargent, Yale, Best and Falcon. A second decision sits alongside that one: motor-controlled locks are field selectable fail safe or fail secure with automatic 12V or 24V, AC or DC operation, while solenoid-controlled locks like this one must be specified fail safe or fail secure and at a fixed voltage when you order.
13) Can I use the ACND80PDEU on an exit-only door with no outside lever?
No. The ACND80PDEU is a storeroom lever lock, keyed and levered on the outside. For an exit-only opening where there is no outside trim, ACSI makes the ACND12DEU, a Grade 1 electric cylindrical lock with reversible lever, exit only, fail secure at 12VAC/DC. The fail safe exit-only equivalent is the ACND12DEL.
14) What should be used instead of an electrified cylindrical lock on a door with no power run to the frame?
Neither the ACSI ACND80PDEU nor the DynaLock ECL-1 electrified cylindrical lockset suits that opening as-is. The ACND80PDEU is hard wired and is not a battery operated lock, so it requires 12V or 24V brought to the door before it will function. The DynaLock ECL-1 is likewise an electrified cylindrical lockset. If the opening cannot be powered, the access control has to be solved another way or power has to be run as part of the scope.
15) What other brand of electrified cylindrical lockset could I use instead of the ACSI ACND80PDEU?
DynaLock's ECL-1 electrified cylindrical lockset is the other electrified cylindrical option carried alongside the ACSI. The ACSI ACND80PDEU is the one to specify when you need it in storeroom function, Grade 1, UL Listed, and matched to a particular lever style and finish across a run of openings, since it comes in five lever designs and eight finishes with 12V or 24V and an optional RX switch.
