1) Does the Adams Rite 1830 bottom rail deadlock come with a cylinder?
No cylinder ships with it. You order the mortise cylinder separately, and it has to be a standard Adams Rite MS cam mortise cylinder. A thumbturn, if you want one on the inside, is also a separate purchase. Plan the cylinder into the order or the lock arrives with nothing to key it.
2) What is Dim. A on the Adams Rite 1830 and how do I pick between 31/32 inch and 1-1/8 inch?
Those are the two cylinder height and lock depth combinations the 1830 is built in: 31/32 inch with Dim. A of 1-5/8 inch, and 1-1/8 inch with Dim. A of 1-25/32 inch. The pairing sets how deep the case sits in the bottom rail and what cylinder height the lock takes. Measure the rail depth you have to work with and match the cylinder you are buying to the same height, since the cylinder is a separate order.
3) What does the Adams Rite 1830 lock into? Do I need a special threshold?
It strikes into a metal threshold. The bolt drops down and the threshold has to be cut for a strike slot as part of the install, so you need a metal threshold under the door and you need to be able to cut it. If the opening has a wood or stone sill, or a threshold you can't machine, this isn't the lock for that door.
4) Should I use a bottom rail deadlock or a standard MS deadlock on my storefront door?
It comes down to where you can get security into the door. A standard MS style deadlock throws sideways into the jamb or into the meeting stile and needs case room in the vertical stile. A bottom rail lock like the 1830 puts the bolt down into the threshold instead, which is what you use when the stile is too narrow for a conventional case, when the door is mostly tempered glass, or when you want the locking point at the floor. Downside is the threshold has to be metal and has to be cut for the strike.
5) Is the Adams Rite 1830 deadlock Grade 1?
Grade 1, the highest of the three ANSI/BHMA durability grades and the one commonly written into commercial specs. It is catalogued for commercial use, not residential. The bolt is six-ply laminated steel with an alumina-ceramic core, which is the part that resists a saw attack.
6) Can I put the Adams Rite 1830 on an access control system with an electric strike?
It's compatible with Adams Rite electric strikes, so it can be brought into an access control setup. Keep in mind the bolt lands in the threshold, not the jamb, so the strike work is at the floor and the wiring has to be routed accordingly, which is a different rough-in than a jamb-mounted strike on a rim device.
7) Can the Adams Rite 1830 deadlock be keyed from both sides, and how does the key work?
It runs on a 360 degree key operation, and it takes a thumbturn on the inside if you want key outside and turn inside. The key only comes out in the locked or unlocked position, so there's no half-thrown state where someone walks away thinking the door is secure. Cylinder and thumbturn are both ordered separately, and the cylinder must be an Adams Rite MS cam mortise cylinder.
8) I have wood and hollow metal doors as well as aluminum. Does the Adams Rite 1830 fit those?
Hollow metal and wood door options exist within the 1830 family, but the versions built here are for aluminum and glass doors. If you're standardizing across a building with mixed door materials, order the aluminum and glass version for the storefront openings and specify the hollow metal or wood variant separately for the others.
9) Will the Adams Rite 1830 hold up on a high-traffic entrance without the cylinder working loose?
The faceplate is armored, which covers the cylinder set screws. That does two things on a busy entrance: it keeps someone from getting at the set screws to attack the cylinder, and it stops the screws backing off from the constant cycling. Paired with Grade 1 construction, that's the durability case for a retail or multi-tenant entry door.
