Both. The 4900 deadlatch is built for narrow stile aluminum and hollow metal doors, which is why it turns up on storefront entrances and on metal service doors in the same building. The constraint is stile width, not material, the door has to have enough stile to take a narrow backset case at 1-1/8 or 1-1/2 inches.
7) Does replacing the faceplate on a 4900 deadlatch fix a door that can be loided or shimmed open?
Not by itself. The anti-loiding protection on the 4900 comes from the stainless steel auxiliary deadlatch pin in the latch case, which blocks the latchbolt from being pushed back once the door closes. If a card or shim is defeating the door, check that pin and the strike alignment. A new faceplate is the fix for a damaged plate or a failed weatherseal, and it does restore proper latch geometry if the old plate was bent away from the stile.
