Adams Rite ADR-8655 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the Adams Rite 8655 tall door extension kit used for?
The 8655 is an extension kit that lets an Adams Rite 8500 or 8600 Series exit device be installed on a door taller than the device covers on its own, up to 10 feet in height. It supplies the vertical rod extension components needed for the taller opening. It is not a device on its own, so the 8500 or 8600 Series exit device is ordered separately and the kit goes on top of it.
2) Do I need an extension kit for a standard 7 foot door with an Adams Rite exit device?
No. The 8655 exists for oversized openings where a standard 8500 or 8600 Series configuration does not reach, which is why it is described as covering doors up to 10 feet. A normal commercial door height is handled by the device as configured, so the extension kit is only in play once the door runs taller than the standard device covers.
3) Does the Adams Rite 8655 extension kit fit an 8300 or 8400 series exit device?
The 8655 is specified for the Adams Rite 8500 and 8600 Series. If the device on the door is another Adams Rite series, this kit is not the match for it, and the tall door components for that series should be sourced against that series instead. Confirm the series stamped on the existing device before ordering, since the model number on the touchbar end cap is what decides it.
4) What kind of doors is the Adams Rite 8655 tall door kit meant for, aluminum or hollow metal?
Narrow stile aluminum doors. That is the door construction the 8500 and 8600 Series exit devices this kit extends are built around, so the application is aluminum storefront and entrance doors rather than wide stile wood or hollow metal leaves. Tall aluminum entrances in schools, warehouses, and retail fronts are the typical use.
5) Is the Adams Rite 8655 an exit device or just parts?
Parts. The 8655 is an accessory kit of extension components, catalogued by Adams Rite under model 8655, and it does nothing by itself. Budget for the 8500 or 8600 Series exit device as a separate line, then add the 8655 for the tall opening. Installation follows the parent device instructions rather than a standalone procedure.
