1) Which Aiphone master stations does the AX-16SW selector work with?
The AX-16SW add-on selector is built for the AX Series AX-8M and AX-8MV master stations. It bolts onto the master and gives that master the ability to select and call 16 more door or sub stations. It is not a standalone intercom and it does not work on its own without one of those masters.
2) How many AX-16SW units can I add to one AX system, and how many doors does that cover?
Up to 7 AX-16SW selectors can be used, adding 112 door or sub stations on top of the master's own capacity. The system ceiling is 120 door/sub stations total. If your building needs more openings than that, you are past what the AX-8M/AX-8MV architecture supports.
3) What wire do I need to run between the door stations and the AX-16SW?
Cat-5e between the door/sub station and the add-on exchange unit. Plan the pulls for that before you finalize the riser, since it is the cabling the expansion side of the AX system expects.
4) How does the AX-16SW mount - does it need its own wall box?
No separate enclosure. The AX-16SW mounts directly to the master station, or to another AX-16SW when you are stacking several, using the brackets supplied with the unit. It is styled to match the AX-8M and AX-8MV so a ganged run looks like one assembly at the desk or wall.
5) I need more call buttons at the front desk but not more doors - is the AX-16SW the right part?
It is, provided the stations are on the AX system. The AX-16SW is a selector: it adds 16 more select/call positions to an AX-8M or AX-8MV, whether those positions are entrance door stations or interior sub stations. It does not add audio or video hardware of its own, and it does not increase how many masters the system has.
6) Is the Aiphone AX-16SW a commercial-duty product or a residential intercom part?
It is classified commercial. The AX platform it expands is a multi-station intercom and entry system, which is why the expansion counts run to 120 door/sub stations rather than the handful a home system needs. Typical use is offices, schools, healthcare and multi-tenant buildings where one attendant answers many entries.
