The AX-B and AX-BN are interior sub stations designed for use with the AX system. The AX-B and AX-BN sub stations are semi-flush mount and can be mounted into a 6-⅛" H x 3-¾” W cutout in a wall, or can be mounted using the model BBX-1E back box. The sub stations with the “N” at the end of the model number include the PRIVACY feature, which prevents a master station from hearing audio from that sub location while the Privacy button is engaged.

1) What is the difference between the Aiphone AX-B and the AX-BN?
The N is the privacy button. On the AX-BN, engaging Privacy stops the master station from hearing audio at that sub location, so nobody can monitor the room without the occupant knowing. The AX-B has no privacy button and can be monitored from the master at any time. Same semi-flush housing, same wiring, same hands-free operation either way. Pick the BN for offices, exam rooms, apartments, or anywhere a tenant or staff member would object to open monitoring; pick the B for corridors, lobbies, and back-of-house where monitoring is the point.
2) How far can I run the wire to an Aiphone AX sub station, and what cable do I use?
Up to 980 feet, using Cat-5e or 2-conductor cable. That distance covers most single-building runs, so a station at the far end of a warehouse or a top-floor unit is usually within reach of the master without repeaters. Cat-5e is the common choice on new installs; the 2-conductor option matters when you are reusing existing pairs in an older building rather than pulling new cable.
3) Does the Aiphone AX-B sub station work on its own, or does it need a master station?
It needs the AX system. The AX-B and AX-BN are interior sub stations, meaning they are the answering point at a room or door and they talk to an AX master station. There is no standalone operation. When the master answers, communication at the sub is hands-free, so the occupant does not pick up or hold anything to talk.
4) Can I use the Aiphone AX-B indoor sub station at an entrance or outdoors?
No. This is an interior station in an ABS plastic housing with a semi-flush indoor mount, intended for inside rooms and corridors. For a door or gate entrance you need an AX door station rated for that use, not the AX-B. Putting an interior station on an exterior wall exposes an unsealed plastic enclosure to weather.
5) Does the Aiphone AX-B sub station have a camera or video?
Audio only. The AX-B and AX-BN are hands-free audio sub stations, with no display and no camera. If you need to see who is calling, the video has to come from an AX video door station feeding a video-capable master, and the AX-B remains an audio answering point on that system.
