1) What is the difference between the Aiphone LE-B and the LE-BN sub station?
Both are LEF Series sub stations and they are functionally the same interior station, with one difference: the LE-BN adds a privacy button that prevents anyone at the master station from listening in on the room. If you are putting a station in a private office, exam room, or dorm room, order the privacy version. For a corridor, dock, or shop location where you want the master to be able to call in without the room blocking it, order the standard one.
2) Will the Aiphone LE-B sub station work with any Aiphone master station?
No. The LE-B and LE-BN are built to talk to LEF master stations, and that is the system they belong in. They are not a universal intercom station, so if your head end is a different Aiphone platform, the LE-B is the wrong sub station for it.
3) How far can I run wire from the LE-B sub station back to the master station?
Run length depends on the gauge. From this sub station to the farthest LEF master station you get 650 feet on 22AWG and 1,600 feet on 18AWG. Wiring is 3 conductor with an overall shield, and Aiphone calls out #822203 for the 22AWG and #821803 for the 18AWG. On a long building run, go 18AWG from the start rather than pulling twice.
4) What size opening do I need for the LE-B intercom station, and how far does it stick out of the wall?
The station body measures 8-3/16 inches H x 6 inches W x 13/16 inches D. It is a wall mount station, so the 13/16 inch depth is what determines how much of it sits proud of the finished wall surface. Lay that footprint out on the wall before you cut, especially if you are coordinating with tile joints or panel seams.
5) Does the LE-B sub station let people talk hands-free, or do they have to hold a button?
Both modes are supported, and the master station decides which one is in use: push-to-talk (simplex) or open voice hands-free. That matters for a staff room or a clean environment where nobody wants to touch the station, but the behavior is set at the master, not at the sub station itself.
6) Can I standardize on one LEF sub station across a whole building and just add privacy where needed?
Yes, and that is the usual approach. The LE-B and LE-BN share the same footprint, the same ABS housing, the same 3 conductor shielded wiring, and the same communication modes, so a facility can spec one station type throughout and swap in the LE-BN only at the rooms that need eavesdrop protection. Field techs see the same wiring on every drop.
