1) What intercom system does the Aiphone LE-D door station work with?
The LE-D is built for Aiphone's LEF Series intercom systems. It's the outdoor call-in and talk point; the master station inside does the answering. Communication is open voice hands-free at the door, controlled by press-to-talk at the master. If your building runs a different Aiphone platform, this is not the door station for it.
2) Can the Aiphone LE-D door station be mounted outside in the weather?
Yes, within limits. The LE-D is an ABS plastic weather resistant door station rated IP43, and it operates from 14 to 140 degrees F (-10 to 60 C). IP43 covers spray from up to 60 degrees off vertical, so it belongs under a soffit, canopy, or recessed entry, not on a wall taking direct driving rain or hose-down. For a covered apartment entry or a service door with an overhang it's fine.
3) Does the LE-D door station need a special back box, or can I surface mount it on the wall?
No back box required. The LE-D mounts directly to the wall surface, and it will also mount to a standard 1-gang box if you already have one in the opening or want the wiring concealed. That's the practical reason to pick it over a flush unit on a retrofit: no cutting into finished masonry or siding.
4) How far can the Aiphone LE-D be from the master station, and what wire do I run?
Run 3-conductor overall shielded cable. With Aiphone #822203 (22AWG) you get 650 feet from the door station to the farthest master station; with #821803 (18AWG) that goes to 1,600 feet. Pick the gauge off your longest home run, not the average one. A single garden apartment building is comfortably inside the 22AWG number; a gate at the back of a property or a warehouse office at the far end of the building is where you step up to 18AWG.
5) Does the Aiphone LE-D door station unlock the door, or do I need separate hardware?
Communication and call-in only. The LE-D is the talk and call point at the door; it does not release a strike or maglock on its own. If the job needs the visitor let in remotely, you're specifying an electric strike or maglock and the release side of the LEF master station separately. Order the locking hardware and its power supply as their own line items.
6) Is the LE-D a video door station or audio only?
Audio only. The LE-D is an open voice hands-free audio door station on the LEF platform. If the tenant or receptionist needs to see who is at the door before releasing it, an audio-only LEF station won't do that and you want a video door station and a video-capable master instead.
7) Can a visitor at the LE-D talk without holding a button?
Correct, nothing to press and hold at the door. The visitor pushes the call button, and once the master station answers, conversation is hands-free open voice at the door station. Talk direction is controlled by press-to-talk at the master station, not at the entry. That matters for accessibility and for anyone standing there with both hands full.
8) Is the Aiphone LE-D rated for commercial use or is it a residential intercom?
Commercial. The LE-D is a commercial-grade door station, and the ABS housing plus IP43 rating is what carries it in a multi-family lobby, a tenant service entrance, or an office rear door. Property managers standardizing several buildings on one LEF system use the same LE-D at every opening.
