Aiphone DA-1AS – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What comes in the Aiphone DA-1AS door phone set?
The DA-1AS is a complete 1-call audio entry kit: the DA-1DS entrance station for the door, the DA-1MD handset tenant station for inside, and the PT-1211C power supply. You add wire and, if you are releasing a door, an electric strike. Nothing else in the kit needs to be bought separately to get the intercom talking.
2) Do I need a separate transformer to run a door strike with the Aiphone DA-1AS?
No. On the DA-1AS set the door release is powered through the entrance station, so no additional transformer is needed. The strike circuit is rated 9.5 to 20V AC into 70 ohms or higher resistance, and Aiphone specifies the EL-12S strike for it. A lower-impedance strike than 70 ohms is outside what the entrance station will drive.
3) How far can I run the wire between the power supply and the door station on a DA-1AS intercom?
Cumulative run from the PT-1211C power supply to the entrance station or door strike is 360 feet on 22 AWG, or 1,020 feet on 18 AWG. Power supply to the tenant station is shorter: 180 feet on 22 AWG, 510 feet on 18 AWG. Those tenant-station numbers are usually the limiting factor in a walk-up building, so size the gauge off that leg first.
4) What kind of cable does the Aiphone DA-1AS require?
Two-conductor throughout, but the type differs by leg. Entrance station to tenant station takes 2-conductor overall shielded (Aiphone #822202) or 2-conductor low-capacitance, PE insulated, solid, non-shielded (Aiphone #871802). Power supply to tenant station takes the non-shielded #871802 type. Standard Cat5 or thermostat wire is not what this system is specified on.
5) How many apartments will the Aiphone DA-1AS cover?
One. It is a 1-call set, meaning a single entrance station calling a single tenant station, so it suits a single-unit entry, an office door, a shop back door, or one apartment over a locked vestibule. For a multi-unit building with several tenants on one door you need a multi-call DA Series configuration, not this kit.
6) Can the tenant hold a normal two-way conversation, or is it push-to-talk?
The tenant side uses a handset and is full-duplex, so both people talk and listen at once with no button to hold. The door station is hands-free for the visitor. That is a practical difference from cheaper push-to-talk intercoms where the visitor has to be coached to press and release.
7) Can the DA-1AS tenant station trigger anything besides the door strike?
There is an option button on the DA-1MD tenant station for controlling an external device, which is how installers typically pick up a gate operator, a second strike, or a light from inside the unit. The main door release is handled separately off the entrance station.
8) Is the Aiphone DA-1AS readable at the door at night?
Yes, the DA-1DS entrance station has a backlit directory, so the name strip and call button stay legible after dark without adding a separate vestibule light.
9) Can the tenant turn the call tone down without missing calls?
The tenant station has call tone volume control with a mute indicator, so the occupant can quiet it and still see at a glance that it is muted. That matters in an office or a bedroom-adjacent install where the tone gets silenced and then forgotten.
10) Is the Aiphone DA-1AS rated for commercial use or just homes?
It is a commercial-grade audio entry set, and the 2-wire architecture is what makes it practical to retrofit into an existing building: two conductors between the door and the tenant station rather than pulling a multi-conductor bundle. Silver finish on the DA-1AS.
