1) What wire does the Aiphone DB-1MD tenant master station need back to the entrance station?
Run 2-conductor, low capacitance, PE insulated, solid, non-shielded cable from the entrance station to the DB-1MD master (Aiphone #871802). From the master out to a tenant sub station it's 4-conductor of the same construction (Aiphone #871804), and between tenant sub stations you need 4-conductor plus 2-conductor when they share power (#822206 or #871804). Standard station wire, no shielding and no coax.
2) How far can I run the DB-1MD intercom from the power supply?
From the power supply to the DB-1MD master station you get 180 feet on 22AWG or 510 feet on 18AWG. Power supply to the entrance station is 360 feet on 22AWG, 1,020 feet on 18AWG cumulative. The master to the farthest tenant sub station is 330 feet. On anything past a small building, pull 18AWG.
3) Does the Aiphone DB-1MD let a tenant buzz the door open?
Yes, there's a door release button on the DB-1MD, and it's powered by the door station rather than requiring a separate supply at the tenant unit. That's how a tenant answers the entrance and releases the door from inside the apartment or office.
4) A tenant says they can't hear the door call from the back bedroom. What can I add to the DB-1MD?
Two options. Add the Aiphone IER-2 call extension speaker to repeat the call tone in another room, or use the RY-ES relay in place of the IER-2 to trigger a third party bell or strobe light. The RY-ES route is the one for hearing-impaired tenants or loud work areas where you want a visual signal.
5) Is the DB-1MD hands-free or do you have to hold a talk button?
Both. The DB-1MD works hands-free using VOX, or in push-to-talk simplex mode if the space is noisy and voice activation keeps cutting in and out. Noisy lobbies and busy offices usually get set to push-to-talk.
6) Can a tenant call another room in the same apartment with the DB-1MD?
Yes. The DB-1MD does All Call between stations within the same residence or office, so a master in the kitchen can reach sub stations elsewhere in the unit. That is separate from answering the building entrance.
7) What can the option button on the DB-1MD control?
The option button provides a normally open dry contact rated AC/DC 24V, 1.6A max, for controlling an external device. Typical uses are a second door, a gate operator, or a light. Anything drawing more than 1.6A needs to be switched through an interposing relay, not directly off this contact.
8) Is the Aiphone DB-1MD audio only, or does it show video of the entrance?
Audio only. The DB-1MD is a hands-free audio tenant master in Aiphone's DB Series multi-tenant intercom line. If the building spec calls for tenants to see who is at the door, this is not the station for it, you need a video tenant station instead.
9) Can tenants turn the DB-1MD call tone down, and how do I know it's muted?
There's a call tone volume control plus a separate receive volume control on the DB-1MD, so the chime level and the talk level are set independently. An LED mute indicator shows when the call tone has been silenced, which saves a service call when a tenant reports they stopped getting door calls.
