1) What does the Aiphone DB-1SD do, and can it work on its own?
The DB-1SD is a sub master station for the Aiphone DB Series audio intercom, and it is not a standalone system. It works off a DB-1MD tenant master station, adding a second (or third) answering point inside the same residence or office. The door station and entrance wiring terminate at the master; the sub station hangs off that master on 4-conductor cable. If you have no master yet, the DB-1MD is the piece you order first.
2) How far can an Aiphone DB-1SD sub station be run from the DB-1MD master?
330 feet is the limit from the tenant master station to the farthest tenant sub station. That is the number to check before you fish cable to a back office or an upstairs bedroom. Two other runs on the same system have their own limits: power supply to tenant master is 180 feet on 22AWG or 510 feet on 18AWG, and power supply to entrance station is 360 feet on 22AWG or 1,020 feet on 18AWG, cumulative.
3) What wire do I need to run to an Aiphone DB Series sub station?
Master to sub station takes 4-conductor, low capacitance, PE insulated, solid, non-shielded cable, Aiphone #871804. Between sub stations it is 4-conductor plus 2-conductor when they share power, using Aiphone #822206 or #871804. The entrance station back to the tenant master runs on 2-conductor of the same construction, Aiphone #871802. This is a non-shielded, low-cap system, so ordinary shielded security cable or Cat cable is not the right pull.
4) Can a sub station release the door, or does someone have to answer at the main station?
The DB-1SD has its own door release button, so whoever is nearest answers and buzzes the visitor in without walking to the master. The release is powered by the door station, not by the sub station.
5) Can you talk between rooms on an Aiphone DB Series intercom, or only to the door?
Room to room works. The DB Series does internal and external communication, and the sub station has All Call to reach the other stations in the same residence or office, so a property manager can use it as a two-way office intercom as well as a door answering point. Talk is either hands-free VOX or push-to-talk simplex.
6) Can an Aiphone DB-1SD switch a gate operator or a light, and what contact rating does it have?
There is an option button for external device control on a normally open dry contact, rated AC/DC 24V 1.6A max. That is enough to trigger a gate operator input, a relay, or a low voltage light circuit. It is a dry contact, so it switches your circuit rather than supplying power, and anything above 24V or drawing more than 1.6A needs an interposing relay.
7) Nobody hears the door from the shop floor. What can I add to an Aiphone DB Series system?
Two options. An IER-2 call extension speaker puts the call tone in a second location. Or use an RY-ES signaling adapter in place of the IER-2 to fire a third party bell or light, which is the usual answer for a noisy warehouse or a shop where a chime will not cut through. You pick one approach or the other, not both.
8) Is the Aiphone DB Series video or audio only?
Audio only. The DB Series is an audio entry system for new construction or for replacing an existing audio intercom. If your spec calls for the tenant to see the visitor, this is the wrong family and you want an Aiphone video door station platform instead.
9) Can I turn the door chime down on an Aiphone DB-1SD without missing calls?
Call tone volume is adjustable at the station, and there is an LED mute indicator so a muted station is visible at a glance rather than silently ignored. Receive volume is a separate control. Useful in a leasing office or a bedroom station where the tone needs to be down at night.
10) Is the Aiphone DB-1SD suitable for a commercial building or is it a residential unit?
Rated commercial, and used in multi-tenant intercom work as well as single residences. The practical limit is not the building type but the architecture: each tenant master serves its own subs within 330 feet, so it suits small offices and per-unit installs rather than a large centralized directory system.
