The JP-8Z is a distribution adaptor for the JP Series. The adaptor is utilized when homerun wiring is desired. The JP-4MED master station and each JP-4HD sub master station will connect to this adaptor using CAT-5e/CAT-6 cable. The JP-8Z can surface mount using the mounting holes or with the W-DIN11 mounting rail. One or two PS-2420UL power supplies are used, depending on how many sub master stations are connected.

1) What does the Aiphone JP-8Z actually do in a JP Series intercom system?
The JP-8Z is a distribution adaptor that lets you run a homerun (star) wiring topology instead of daisy-chaining stations. The JP-4MED master and each JP-4HD sub master land on the adaptor with Cat-5e or Cat-6, so every station has its own dedicated run back to a central point. It works with both the JP Series and the JM Series.
2) How many sub master stations can I homerun off one JP-8Z?
Up to seven JP-4HD sub master stations can be homerun to a single JP-8Z, plus the JP-4MED master station. If your building needs more than seven sub stations, you are looking at more than one adaptor.
3) How far can I run cable between the JP-8Z and the stations?
Three different distance limits apply, and they are not the same. From the adaptor to each JP-4HD sub master you get 165 feet. From the JP-4MED master station back to the adaptor you get 650 feet. The power supply run is the short one: only 33 feet from the PS-2420UL to the JP-8Z, which is what usually dictates where you mount the enclosure.
4) How many power supplies do I need with the JP-8Z?
It runs on 24V DC from the PS-2420UL, and you size by station count: one PS-2420UL per four JP-4HD sub masters. A system with up to four subs takes one supply; a fully loaded seven-sub system takes two. The supply is not included with the adaptor, so order it on the same job.
5) What wire do I need for the power run to the JP-8Z?
The station side uses Cat-5e or Cat-6. The power side is different: 2-conductor, mid capacitance, solid, non-shielded wire, and Aiphone specifies their #871802 for it. Do not substitute Cat cable on the power leg.
6) Can the JP-8Z be installed outdoors or in an unconditioned mechanical room?
No. The adaptor is rated 32 to 104 degrees F (0 to 40 C), so it belongs in a conditioned interior space. Freezing garages, attics, and exterior locations are outside its range.
7) Do I need a JP-8Z if I only have one master and one sub station?
Not necessarily. The adaptor exists specifically for when homerun wiring is wanted, typically to pull multiple sub masters back to a central point. A simple small system wired directly does not require it. Where it earns its place is multi-unit or multi-floor work where you want every station on its own dedicated run for easier troubleshooting.
8) Is the JP-8Z a residential or commercial-grade device?
