The JP-4MED is a video master station with a 7" touchscreen LCD. The JP-4MED offers handset (duplex) and hands-free (VOX) communication. This unit will support up to four door stations and eight inside stations. All inside stations are equipped with a door release button for the user to allow visitor entry.

The JP‑4MED is also equipped with PTZ and brightness controls, giving the user control of the door station camera angle and camera lighting for better visibility. Picture memory records up to 20 calls to internal memory and 1,000 calls to a removable SD / SDHC card (not included).

The JP‑4MED connects to door stations using 18AWG, 2-conductor cable and connects to sub master stations using CAT‑5e or CAT‑6 cable.

1) How many door stations and inside stations can the Aiphone JP-4MED master station handle?
The JP-4MED supports up to four door stations and eight inside stations. That is the ceiling for the system, so if you are wiring a building with more than four entries, or need a ninth inside station, the JP-4MED will not cover it. Every inside station on the system carries a door release button, so a tenant at any station can let a visitor in without going to the main master.
2) What wire do I need to run from the door station to the JP-4MED, and how far can it go?
Door station to master runs on 2-conductor, mid cap, solid, non-shielded wire (Aiphone #871802). Distance is the deciding factor: 165 feet on 22AWG, 330 feet on 18AWG. If your entry is more than 165 feet from where the master hangs, pull 18AWG. Power supply to the master uses the same wire type but a much shorter leash, 16 feet at 22AWG or 33 feet at 18AWG, so plan on mounting the power supply close to the master, not in a remote closet.
3) Can I use Cat-5e for the whole Aiphone JP-4MED video intercom system?
No, and this trips people up. Cat-5e or Cat-6 is only for the run between the JP-4MED and a JP-8Z or sub master station. The door stations do not run on Cat cable, they need 2-conductor, mid cap, solid, non-shielded wire (Aiphone #871802), as does the power supply feed. So a typical job is a mix: Cat-5e between masters, 2-conductor to the doors.
4) Can the Aiphone JP-4MED release an electric strike or maglock directly?
The JP-4MED has a door release contact rated 24V AC/DC at 0.5A, and it is a normally open dry closure contact. A dry contact carries no power of its own, so it switches the strike circuit rather than powering the strike. Size your lock power supply separately and keep the switched load within 24V and half an amp. Release is selective, meaning the user picks which door opens when more than one door station is on the system.
5) Will the JP-4MED fit the wall space where my old intercom master was mounted?
The JP-4MED measures 5-11/16 inches H x 10-1/16 inches W x 1-7/8 inches D. It is a wide, shallow unit, so the constraint is usually horizontal space, not depth. Check that you have a clear 10-1/16 inches of width at the mounting location before you pull the old master off the wall.
6) Does the JP-4MED record images of visitors, and do I need an SD card?
Picture memory is built in for up to 20 calls at 6 images per call, with up to 5 of those calls protected from being overwritten. Add a removable SD or SDHC card and capacity jumps to 1,000 calls at 40 images per call, with up to 100 calls protected. The card is not included, so order one alongside the master if you want the larger archive. For a property manager who wants a record of who came to the door, the built-in 20 calls fills up fast on a busy entry.
7) Can I aim the camera at the door from inside without going outside to adjust it?
Yes. The JP-4MED gives you digital pan, tilt and zoom plus brightness control from the master, so you can reframe what the door station camera shows and compensate for a dark or backlit entry without touching the outdoor unit.
