Aiphone JPS-4AED – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What comes in the Aiphone JPS-4AED video intercom set?
Three pieces ship together: the JP-DA surface mount door station, the JP-4MED 7 inch color touchscreen master station, and the PS-2420UL 24V DC Class II power supply. That covers one entry and one inside answering point. Wire is not part of the set, and the JP-DA mounts to a 1-gang box, so you supply the box and cable.
2) How far can I run the wire from the Aiphone JP-DA door station to the master station?
165 feet on 22AWG, or 330 feet on 18AWG. The run from the power supply to the master station is much shorter: 16 feet at 22AWG, 33 feet at 18AWG, so plan on mounting the PS-2420UL close to the JP-4MED and pulling the longer run out to the door. Both runs use 2-conductor, mid cap, solid, non-shielded wire (Aiphone #871802).
3) Can I add more doors or a second inside station to the Aiphone JP-4MED?
Yes. The JP-4MED master supports up to 4 door stations and 7 sub-masters, so a building with a front entry, a rear entry and a garage door can run off one master, with additional inside stations added where staff or tenants need to answer. Those extra stations are ordered separately; the JPS-4AED set covers one door and one master.
4) Can visitors be let in from the intercom, or do I still have to walk to the door?
Every inside station in the JP series is equipped with a door release button, so whoever answers the JP-4MED can release the entry without leaving the desk. That is the reason property managers and front-office staff use this set over a plain audio intercom. The actual lock or strike at the door is a separate item and is not part of the set.
5) Is the Aiphone JP-DA door station rated for outdoor mounting?
The JP-DA is a surface mount station in ABS plastic with a clear polycarbonate lens cover over the camera. The PS-2420UL power supply packed with it is designed for indoor use only, so mount the supply inside, in a closet or equipment room, and keep it out of an exterior location.
6) How much of the entry can you actually see on the Aiphone JPS-4AED camera?
The JP-DA uses a 1/4 inch CMOS color camera with a wide viewing angle of roughly 100 by 170 degrees, plus digital pan, tilt and zoom from the touchscreen. That spread is wide enough to pick up a delivery left on the ground or a second person standing off to the side of the door, and the digital PTZ lets the operator push in without re-aiming the camera.
7) Does the Aiphone JP-4MED work hands-free or do you need to pick up a handset?
Both. The JP-4MED does open voice hands-free with auto-voice actuation (VOX), and it also supports handset simultaneous (duplex) communication when you want a private, two-way-at-once conversation. It handles room-to-room calling between inside stations as well, which is what makes it usable as a small office or front-desk intercom and not just a door answer point.
8) Is the Aiphone JPS-4AED intercom set suitable for a commercial building?
It is catalogued for commercial use, and the JP series capacity reflects that: 4 door stations and 7 sub-masters off one master. The PS-2420UL supply included with it is UL and CSA listed. Typical fits are a small office suite, a clinic reception, or a multi-family entry where one screen covers front and rear doors.
9) Will the Aiphone JP-DA door station see a visitor at night?
The JP-DA carries a white illumination LED for low light conditions, along with an illuminated call button so the visitor can find the button in the dark. In a fully unlit entry the LED is doing the work, so keep the station within a few feet of where a person will stand rather than set back behind a deep recess.
