Aiphone IPW-VPN – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Which Aiphone systems does the IPW-VPN router work with?
The IPW-VPN is built for Aiphone IX Series and GT Series systems. It sets up an encrypted tunnel so you can reach those systems remotely for programming and maintenance over a standard, public, or private network. With IX equipment, Aiphone recommends programming the stations to use multicast for best results.
2) Will the IPW-VPN work if the intercom system is behind a firewall or NAT router?
Yes. The IPW-VPN is made to operate behind firewalls and NAT devices, encrypting all IP protocol traffic through the tunnel. That is the point of the unit: it lets a technician reach an IX or GT system on a customer network without opening the system up to the public internet.
3) Does the IPW-VPN pass multicast and broadcast traffic for Aiphone IX paging?
Yes. The router supports broadcast and multicast network configurations, and it also supports mesh applications for larger multi-site architectures. That matters on IX systems where paging and all-call rely on multicast, which is why Aiphone recommends programming IX stations to multicast when the IPW-VPN is in the path.
4) How much bandwidth does the Aiphone IPW-VPN VPN router support?
Up to 30Mbps through the encrypted tunnel. That is the ceiling to size your remote programming and maintenance sessions against for an IX or GT system.
5) What power supply does the IPW-VPN need, and is it included?
A 12V DC power source is supplied with the IPW-VPN, so you do not need to spec a separate transformer for it. Plan a receptacle or power location at the equipment rack or backboard where the unit mounts.
6) Can the IPW-VPN be installed in an unconditioned space like a garage, gatehouse, or outdoor enclosure?
Its rated operating range is -40 to 158 degrees F (-40 to 70 degrees C), which covers unheated and uncooled spaces in most climates. It still needs a dry, protected location and a 12V DC supply, so a weather-rated enclosure is the normal approach for anything exposed.
7) Does the IPW-VPN replace the intercom system, or is it an add-on?
It is an add-on network accessory, not a door station or master station. The IPW-VPN only provides the encrypted transport between sites; the IX or GT Series hardware still does the intercom and door release work.
8) Is the IPW-VPN a residential product or a commercial one?
It is classed as commercial equipment. Typical placements are commercial building security systems, multi-tenant residential properties, schools, healthcare facilities, industrial sites, and government buildings running remote door entry and intercom networks.
9) What does 2 talkpaths mean on the Aiphone IPW-VPN?
The unit carries 2 talkpaths, meaning two simultaneous communication channels can run across the tunnel at once. If your site regularly needs more concurrent conversations than that through the same link, size the design accordingly.
