Aiphone SBX-IXGDM7 - Stainless Steel Surface Mount Box for IXG-DM7-HID

The SBX-IXGDM7 is the surface mount back box for the Aiphone IXG-DM7-HID entrance station. It's what you use when there's no wall cavity to recess the station into, so the whole assembly sits proud on the surface of the wall, column, or gate post. Stainless steel body with a built in rain hood over the top, which is what makes it workable at an exterior door.

Yes. The back of the box is punched with both a 1-gang and a 2-gang mounting hole pattern, so it lands on either standard device box already in the wall. That matters on a retrofit where the previous intercom or card reader left a 2-gang box behind, you don't have to cut and repatch the wall to change the pattern.

There's one conduit knockout, and it's in the bottom of the box. Plan the run to come up from below, or bring it in the wall behind and land on the gang pattern in the back instead. Anyone hoping to top-feed conduit should route it down the wall and enter at the bottom, there's no other knockout to open.

The box is built for it. Stainless steel resists the weather better than painted steel at an exterior entry, and the integral rain hood sheds water off the top of the station instead of letting it run down the face and into the card reader. That is the reason to spec this box rather than a plain surface enclosure.

Only if you're mounting on the surface. The SBX-IXGDM7 exists for openings where you can't or won't cut into the wall, a masonry entry column, a metal gate post, a finished lobby wall you don't want to open up. If you have a stud bay and can flush-mount the station in its recessed back box, you don't need this part.

Different jobs. The SBX-IXGDM7 is cut to one device, the Aiphone IXG-DM7-HID entrance station, and adds a rain hood over it. The SDC 480-SSB is a general weatherized surface box at 5-1/2 x 5-1/2 x 2-1/8 inches with a battery clip, which suits a standalone reader or transmitter, not an intercom entrance station. The MS Sedco 1010 and 1015 are two-piece boxes for that brand's activation switches. None of the three will take an IXG-DM7-HID.

Commercial. It's an Aiphone IXG Series accessory, and the IXG line is the multi-tenant and commercial entry platform, so this box turns up on apartment lobbies, gated multi-family entries, and office front doors rather than single-family houses.

It's a passive enclosure. No electronics, no power connection of its own, the wiring passes through it to the IXG-DM7-HID station that mounts inside. Run the station's cable through the bottom knockout or the gang pattern in the back and terminate at the station.
