Blackburn ICS62-1 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What conductor sizes does the Blackburn ICS62-1 service entrance splice accept?
The ICS62-1 is a two-conductor compression splice sized for a 4 AWG solid conductor on the A side and an 8 AWG solid conductor on the B side. The two ends are different sizes, so it is directional: the larger run goes in the A barrel, the smaller tap or service lead in the B barrel. If both of your conductors are the same size, or either one is stranded rather than solid, this is not the right splice.
2) Can I use the Blackburn ICS62-1 to splice aluminum to copper?
Yes. The ICS62-1 complies with ANSI C119.4 when properly installed on aluminum-to-aluminum or aluminum-to-copper conductors, so it is rated for a dissimilar-metal service entrance splice as well as an all-aluminum one. It is also RUS accepted, which matters on rural utility and co-op work where that acceptance is written into the spec.
3) Does the ICS62-1 splice come insulated, or do I have to tape it?
It is supplied insulated, so no separate cover or taping kit is needed to make up the joint. That is the point of the ICS style for service entrance work: crimp it and the connection is already covered.
4) Do I need a crimp tool for the Blackburn ICS62-1, or can it be tightened with a wrench?
It is a compression connector, not a mechanical set-screw type, so it has to be made up with a die-type crimp tool. There is nothing to torque and nothing to re-tighten later. If you want a connection you can install with a hex key and inspect by torque, you need a mechanical splice instead.
5) How long is the Blackburn ICS62-1 splice body?
The ICS62-1 measures 2-25/32 inches. Worth checking against your available slack if you are splicing inside a meter socket, weatherhead drop, or a tight pedestal, since the body plus the crimp tool head needs room to sit straight on the conductor.
6) Is the Blackburn ICS62-1 sold individually or in a bag?
Sold each, one splice per unit, so order the exact count your job needs rather than a carton quantity. It is manufactured in Mexico.
