Blackburn CS67 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What conductor sizes does the Blackburn CS67 service entrance splice take?
The CS67 is a two-port service entrance compression splice: the A side takes 3-4 AWG and the B side takes 6 AWG, as the CS67 designation A:3-4 B:6 indicates. It joins two conductors only, one run into each end.
2) Can I use the Blackburn CS67 to splice aluminum to copper?
Yes. The CS67 complies with ANSI C119.4 when properly installed on aluminum-to-aluminum or aluminum-to-copper conductors, so it is rated for a dissimilar-metal transition as well as an all-aluminum run.
3) Will the CS67 work if both of my conductors are the same size?
Only if they match the two ports it was built for. The CS67 is a reducing splice with a 3-4 AWG barrel on one end and a 6 AWG barrel on the other, so a 6 AWG conductor pushed into the A side will not compress properly. For a same-size joint, use a straight splice sized to that conductor.
4) Is the CS67 a crimp splice or a set-screw connector?
It is a compression (crimp) splice. You need the matching die and a hydraulic or mechanical compression tool to make it up; there are no set screws and no torque spec involved. Set-screw or mechanical splice bodies are the alternative if you do not have a crimper on the truck.
5) Does the Blackburn CS67 splice come insulated?
No. The CS67 is a bare, uninsulated barrel with no insulation material on it. Plan on covering the finished splice yourself, with heat shrink or tape appropriate to the service entrance application.
6) Is the Blackburn CS67 acceptable for rural utility work?
It is RUS Accepted, which is what utility and co-op specs typically call for on service entrance conductor splices, and it meets ANSI C119.4 when installed correctly.
7) Is the CS67 sold individually or in a bag?
Each. The CS67 splice is sold as a single piece, so order one per splice you are making rather than by the box.
