Blackburn LAC135 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Blackburn LAC135 compression lug take?
The LAC135 is sized for 300 to 350 kcmil conductor. Anything smaller than 300 kcmil will not compress correctly in the barrel, so step down to a lug rated for that size rather than trying to fill the void with a filler or a doubled conductor.
2) Can I use the LAC135 lug on copper cable, or is it aluminum only?
It's an aluminum-body compression lug, and Blackburn's AL-series lugs of this type are dual rated AL9CU, meaning they take aluminum or copper conductor in the 300 to 350 kcmil range. Fill the barrel with inhibitor compound when terminating aluminum.
3) What does the brown color band on this Blackburn lug mean?
Brown is the die-color code for this barrel size. The LAC135 is marked brown, so you set your hydraulic or battery crimper to the matching brown die index for the 300 to 350 kcmil range. Using the wrong die is the most common cause of a failed pull test on a lug this size.
4) Is the LAC135 a one-hole or two-hole lug?
Single slot, one tang. It bolts to a single stud or one hole in a bus pad or breaker lug pad. If your pad is drilled for two-hole NEMA spacing and you need the anti-rotation that gives you, a one-slot tang is the wrong choice and you want a two-hole compression lug instead.
5) What voltage and temperature is this aluminum compression lug rated for?
600 V, 90 degrees C. That covers standard feeder and service terminations on THHN/THWN-2 and XHHW-2 rated at 90 C, so the lug is not the limiting element in a 75 C terminated equipment circuit.
6) Does the LAC135 come insulated or with a heat shrink sleeve?
Bare, with no insulation on it. Surface finish is bare aluminum, so if the termination needs to be covered inside a gutter or on an exposed bus, order heat shrink or an insulating boot separately.
7) Is this lug bolt-on or does it need to be crimped?
It is a compression fitting, so the conductor end has to be crimped with a die-type tool. There is no set screw. Mechanical lugs with an Allen screw are the alternative when you do not have a crimper on site, but a compression termination is what most utility and switchgear specs call for on 300 kcmil feeders.
8) Is the Blackburn LAC135 sold individually or in a bag?
Sold each, one lug per unit, so on a three-phase-plus-neutral termination you would order four and not assume a bag of several. Manufactured in the United States.
