Blackburn LAC10 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I use the Blackburn LAC10 lug on copper wire, or aluminum only?
The LAC10 is an aluminum-body compression terminal lug. It's the aluminum conductor lug in the line; for copper feeders you want a copper compression lug rated for copper. Many aluminum bodies are dual-rated AL9CU, but that rating is not something to assume, so match the conductor metal to the lug marking on the part before you crimp.
2) Is the LAC10 lug rated for 600 volt service and 90 degree C conductors?
Yes on both counts: 600 V rating and a 90 degree C temperature rating, which covers THHN/THWN-2 and XHHW-2 feeders terminated at their 75 or 90 degree ampacity per the installation. That makes it usable in panelboards, disconnects, meter mains, and transformer terminations inside the 600 V class.
3) How many bolt holes does the Blackburn LAC10 have and what is a slotted tang?
One hole, and it is a slot rather than a round hole. A slotted tang lets the lug slide onto a stud or bolt pattern with some tolerance, which helps when landing on a bus bar or breaker pad whose hole spacing doesn't line up exactly. One slot means one bolt per lug.
4) Can a compression lug like the LAC10 be installed without a crimp tool?
No. This is a compression termination, not a setscrew or mechanical lug, so it requires a hydraulic or battery crimper with the correct die. If the crew doesn't have a tool on site, use a mechanical set-screw aluminum lug instead, which lands the conductor with a torque wrench only.
5) What does the yellow color on a Blackburn LAC10 lug mean?
Yellow is the die color code for this barrel size. The LAC10 is yellow, so you set your hydraulic or battery crimp tool to the matching yellow die index called out on the barrel. Using the wrong die is the most common cause of a loose or over-crushed aluminum termination.
6) Does the LAC10 lug come insulated or with a heat shrink sleeve?
Bare, with no insulation on the barrel. If the termination needs to be covered, order heat shrink or a lug insulator separately and size it to the barrel. Bare is normal for gear terminations where phase taping or a cover plate handles the isolation.
7) Do I need to add inhibitor compound when installing an aluminum compression lug like the LAC10?
Aluminum terminations depend on the joint being sealed against oxide, and many compression lugs ship pre-filled with inhibitor in the barrel. The LAC10 is a bare aluminum lug, so if the barrel is not already filled, brush the conductor clean and apply an approved aluminum joint compound before crimping. Buy the compound as a separate item; it is not part of the lug.
8) Is the Blackburn LAC10 sold individually or in a bag of multiples?
Sold each. Count the number of terminations on the job, phases plus neutral plus any ground landing, and order that quantity. Crews normally add a spare or two since a mis-crimped compression lug cannot be reused.
9) Where is the Blackburn LAC10 lug manufactured?
Country of origin is Mexico. That detail matters on public-agency and federally funded jobs where origin has to be documented on the submittal.
