Blackburn LAC20 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What wire size does the Blackburn LAC20 aluminum compression lug take?
The LAC20 is sized for 2/0 AWG stranded or 3/0 AWG solid conductor. It's a one-hole (single slot) slotted tang lug, crimped on rather than set-screwed, so the conductor has to match that range for the die and barrel to form a proper compression.
2) Can I use the Blackburn LAC20 on copper conductor, or is it aluminum only?
It's an aluminum-bodied compression terminal lug. Aluminum-only lugs are marked AL; dual-rated connectors are marked AL9CU. If your run is copper, order a lug rated for copper rather than forcing this one onto it.
3) One slot or two? Will the LAC20 bolt to a two-hole NEMA pad?
The LAC20 is a one-slot (single hole) tang. It bolts to a single-stud lug pad or bus connection. If your drawing calls for a two-hole NEMA pad on 1-3/4 inch centers, this lug won't satisfy it and you need a two-hole version of the same wire size.
4) Is a 600 V, 90 C lug enough for a feeder in a panelboard or transformer termination?
The LAC20 carries a 600 V rating and a 90 C temperature rating, which covers standard building feeder work with THHN/THWN-2 or XHHW-2 insulation in panelboards, disconnects, and transformer lugs. Note the conductor ampacity still has to be derated to whatever the terminal rating of the equipment allows, commonly 75 C.
5) Does the LAC20 come insulated or do I need to cover it after crimping?
No insulation on it. The LAC20 ships bare with no jacket or sleeve, so if the termination needs to be covered you add heat shrink or tape yourself. Bare also means the barrel is visible for crimp inspection after you set the dies.
6) Do I need a special crimp tool for the Blackburn LAC20, or can I use a set screw lug instead?
It's a compression fitting, so it requires a hydraulic or battery crimper with the matching die index. There's no set screw. If you don't have a crimper on the truck, a mechanical set screw lug in the same 2/0 range is the alternative, though many specs and inspectors prefer a compression termination on aluminum feeders because there's nothing to re-torque later.
7) What does the grey color on the Blackburn LAC20 mean?
Grey identifies the die/color code for the 2/0 stranded conductor range on this lug. It's how you confirm on the job that you grabbed the right size out of the bin and matched the correct die index, rather than being a decorative finish. The body itself is bare aluminum.
8) Is the Blackburn LAC20 sold individually or in a bag of ten?
Sold each. You order the exact count you need, which matters when you're terminating three phases and a neutral and don't want a leftover bag of a size you won't see again.
9) Where is the Blackburn LAC20 made? I have a domestic sourcing question on a government job.
The LAC20 is manufactured in Mexico. If your contract carries a Buy American or domestic-content clause on electrical components, that country of origin is what you'd submit for review.
