Blackburn LAC40 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Blackburn LAC40 compression lug take?
The LAC40 is sized for 4/0 AWG conductor, covering 4/0 stranded as well as 4/0 compressed and compact class conductor. It will not crimp correctly on 3/0 or 250 kcmil, so match the die and barrel to 4/0 exactly.
2) Is the Blackburn LAC40 rated for 90 degree C conductor in a 600 volt panel?
Yes. It carries a 600 V rating and a 90 degrees C temperature rating, so it suits standard 600 V power distribution with THHN/XHHW-type 90 C conductor. Remember the ampacity you can actually use is still governed by the terminal temperature rating of the equipment it lands in, commonly 75 C on breakers and lugs.
3) Does the Blackburn LAC40 have one bolt hole or two?
One. It is a single-slot slotted-tang terminal, so it lands on one stud or bolt. The slot rather than a round hole gives you some adjustment to line up with a stud that is not exactly where you want it. If your bus or breaker pad requires a two-hole pattern for mechanical restraint, this lug is not the right part.
4) Can I use the Blackburn LAC40 lug on copper wire, or is it aluminum only?
The LAC40 is an aluminum-body compression terminal. Aluminum-bodied compression lugs of this type are routinely marked AL9CU for use on either aluminum or copper conductor, but confirm the AL9CU marking stamped on the barrel of the lug in hand before landing copper on it. The catalog data here identifies it as an aluminum slotted-tang compression terminal for 4/0.
5) What does the pink color code on a 4/0 compression lug mean?
Pink is the die color code for the 4/0 crimp on this Blackburn terminal. Set your hydraulic or battery crimper to the pink-coded die and match the number of crimps indicated on the barrel. The color is not a finish choice, it is how the installer and the inspector confirm the right die was used.
6) Is the Blackburn LAC40 insulated, and does it need taping after crimping?
There is no insulation on it. The barrel and tang are bare aluminum with no factory sleeve or coating, so anywhere you need the crimp covered you will be adding heat shrink or tape yourself. Order that separately, it does not come with the lug.
7) Is a compression lug like the LAC40 better than a mechanical set screw lug for a 4/0 feeder?
Different install, different tradeoff. The LAC40 is a compression terminal: you need the matching crimp tool and pink die, and once it is crimped it is permanent, with no torque to re-check and no set screw to loosen under thermal cycling. A mechanical set-screw lug needs only a torque wrench and can be reused, which is why it wins on service work and field changes. For a permanent 600 V feeder termination where nobody wants to be re-torquing lugs, compression is the usual choice.
8) Do I get one lug or a bag when I order the Blackburn LAC40?
It sells each, so one lug per unit ordered. If you are terminating a 4/0 three-phase feeder with a neutral and a ground, count your terminations at both ends of the run and order that quantity.
9) Where is the Blackburn LAC40 lug made?
Mexico. That matters on public jobs with domestic sourcing language in the spec, so check the procurement requirements on the project before you submit it.
