1) What are the outside dimensions of the Amsec EST1014 safe, and will it fit inside a closet or cabinet?
The EST1014 measures 9.75 x 14.125 x 9.75 inches on the outside, with an interior of 9.5625 x 13.9375 x 7.75 inches and 1,032 cubic inches of storage. Door clearance is 7.625 x 10.25. If the space is tighter, the EST813 is the smallest of the EST safes at 7.875 x 13 x 7.75 outside; the EST2014 is the widest at 18.875 x 13.375 x 12 and is the one to pick if you need to lay long documents flat.
2) Can an Amsec EST safe be bolted down to a floor or wall?
Yes, and it ships ready to do it. Mounting feet and anchor hardware come standard, and the safe can be anchored to either the wall or the floor. That matters on the EST models because they run 16 to 45 pounds, light enough for someone to carry off unless it is fixed in place. The base is carpeted so it will not mark a finished floor or shelf.
3) What happens if the batteries die in the Amsec EST safe electronic lock?
Two ways in. There is a power override battery box on the safe, so you can feed it external power and open it on the keypad without getting inside first. Failing that, an emergency key-lock override system ships with two keys. The LCD also carries a low-battery indicator, so you get warning before it becomes a problem.
4) How many people can have their own code on an Amsec EST safe, and can I see who opened it?
The lock accepts two user codes, so a manager and one other person, no more. It stores open-door records for the last 14 entries, which you read off the touch screen. If you are outfitting a property or a front desk where a whole shift needs individual codes and a longer audit trail, two codes and 14 entries will not cover it, and you want a multi-user commercial safe lock instead.
5) Is the Amsec EST a fireproof safe or a burglary safe?
Burglary resistant, not fire. The EST Series is built as a small burglary resistant security safe: 14 gauge solid steel body, dual live bolts in heavy gauge steel, a pry-resistant recessed door and internal hinges so the door cannot be popped off at the barrel. Cash, keys, a handgun, and documents you want kept away from an opportunist are what it is for. If your concern is a house or building fire destroying papers, this is the wrong tool and you want a fire rated safe.
6) Which Amsec EST model should I buy for a laptop, and which for cash and documents?
Size is the whole decision here. The EST813 gives 498 cubic inches with a 5.625 x 9 door opening, enough for cash, keys and passports. The EST1014 opens 7.625 x 10.25 and holds 1,032 cubic inches. The EST916 is the tall one, 1,765 cubic inches, 8.8125 x 16.6875 x 12 inside. The EST2014 is the largest at 2,464 cubic inches with a 16.75 x 9.5 door clearance, and the wide low opening is the one that takes a laptop or letter-size files. Measure the door clear opening, not the interior, since that is what limits what actually goes in.
7) Do the Amsec EST safes come with a shelf inside?
Only two of them. The EST1014 and EST2014 each include one removable shelf. The EST813 and EST916 do not. Pull the shelf out if you need the full interior height for something tall.
8) Is the Amsec EST safe strong enough for a rental unit or a small office, or is it a home-only safe?
It is graded commercial and gets used in offices, rentals and back rooms as well as houses. The 14 gauge steel body, dual live bolts and anchor hardware make it a reasonable in-unit or under-counter safe for cash drops and spare keys. The limit is user management: two codes only, so it suits one or two authorized people, not a rotating staff.
9) How much does an Amsec EST safe weigh, and can one person mount it?
Weights run 16 pounds for the EST813, 22 for the EST1014, 30 for the EST916 and 45 for the EST2014. All four are a one-person lift for setting into a closet or cabinet, and all four are light enough that anchoring is the point rather than optional.
