American Security ESL20XL Series Electronic Keypad (UL Type 1) Retro-Fit Kit

Amsec has been a pioneer in the electronic lock market. The ESLXL Series locks offer unrivaled value in electronic safe access. The ESL10XL and ESL20XL locks have the best blend of features and function in Electronic Safe Locks. The ESLXL Series offer an attractive metal die-cast keypad housing with an alpha-numeric slanted keypad. The ESL10XL is a basic keypad lock for home and office applications. The ESL20XL offers advanced features necessary for commercial applications. All the ESL20XL features are programmed from the keypad. The Expansion Modules provide convenient screw terminal and slip spade connections for field wiring by the installer. A/C Power can be connected to the ESL10XL and ESL20XL lock (with the ESLAC kit) or an Expansion Module (with the ESLTFMR kit). Wiring, conduit and attachment hardware is provided with all optional kits.

ESL10XL Features:

  • Replaces most mechanical combination locks. Easy installation and operation.
  • Factory Reset Combination for solving lost combinations without requiring expensive service calls.
  • Electronics are encapsulated within the lock and are sealed to prevent possible moisture related failures.
  • Cable fits through a 1/2" spindle hole without cutting and re-crimping connector.
  • Audible beep and flash from every keystroke gives maximum feedback to the user.
  • 15 minute Penalty Lockout after four incorrect entries protects against manipulation attempts.
  • New patented dead-latched lock design with an internal relock device for maximum security.

  • Slam Bolt version for locker applications.
  • Optional internal battery pack extends operation between battery changes.

ESL20XL Features:

  • Time Delay Mode: Delays can be set from 1 to 99 minutes.
  • Multiple User Mode: When enabled, one Master code and eight user codes are available with full supervisory control and code management.
  • Dual Control Mode: The lock can be programmed to require two combinations to open for added security.
  • Armored Car Override: When enabled, allows an armored car service to bypass Time Delay.
  • External A/C Power: Provides power for unlimited use with battery power as backup.
  • Control Port: Turn the ESL20XL on/off with an Access Manager, Alarm System or other device.

Optional Expansion Modules:

Amsec 0616258 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Amsec ESL20XL retro-fit kit replace the mechanical dial combination lock on my existing safe?
That is what the ESLXL retro-fit kit is built for. It swaps in for most mechanical combination locks on a safe, and the keypad cable passes through a 1/2 inch spindle hole without cutting the connector off and re-crimping it, so you are not modifying the safe door to get it in. You do need the existing lock to be a standard safe lock mount; the kit is a lock and keypad, not a whole bolt work.
2) What is the difference between the Amsec ESL10XL and the ESL20XL safe lock?
Feature set, not form. The ESL10XL is the basic keypad lock aimed at home and office safes. The ESL20XL adds the things a commercial site needs: time delay settable from 1 to 99 minutes, multiple user mode with a master code plus eight user codes and supervisory control, dual control mode requiring two combinations to open, armored car override to bypass time delay, external A/C power with battery backup, and a control port so an access manager or alarm system can turn the lock on and off. If the safe is a cash location on a route, or more than one person opens it, the ESL20XL is the one.
3) Do I order the standard bolt or the slam bolt version of the ESL20XL?
Standard bolt for a normal safe with bolt work, where the handle throws the bolts and the lock holds them. Slam bolt for locker applications, where the door is pushed shut and latches without turning a handle. The ESL20XL keypad kit comes both ways in a black finish, and the bolt style is the decision you make on the order form, so match it to how the door currently secures before you buy.
4) How many people can have their own code on an Amsec ESL20XL?
Ten credentials total on the ESL20XL: one master code, eight user codes, and one courier code. Multiple user mode has to be enabled, and once it is, the master has full supervisory control and code management, so you can add or delete a user when someone leaves without re-combinating the whole safe. All of it is programmed from the keypad itself, no laptop or software.
5) Can I set a delay so an employee cannot open the safe immediately during a robbery?
Time delay on the ESL20XL is settable from 1 to 99 minutes. Enter the code, the lock counts down, then opens during a short window. For cash-in-transit, armored car override can be enabled so the service bypasses the delay on a pickup without disabling it for staff. There is also a courier code and a duress output available through the optional expansion module, which gives a relay contact you wire into the alarm panel for a silent signal.
6) What happens to an Amsec ESL20XL safe lock when the battery dies?
The ESL20XL runs on a 9V battery, and the lock is non-volatile in the sense that codes are held in the lock, not in the battery, so a dead cell means you change the battery and open it, not that you lose the combination. Two things extend that: an optional internal battery pack stretches the interval between changes, and A/C power can be run to the lock with the ESLAC kit (or to an expansion module with the ESLTFMR kit) with the battery left in as backup. Wiring, conduit and attachment hardware come with those optional kits.
7) What do I need to add to an ESL20XL to get a duress alarm output or a second lock on one system?
An expansion module. On its own the ESL20XL keypad kit gives you the lock, keypad and battery power. The optional expansion module adds a duress (silent signal) relay output for connection to an alarm system, an external connection point for the A/C power transformer, an external connection for the control port, and it will take one or two ESL20XL locks off a single module. It uses screw terminals and slip spade connections, so the field wiring is straightforward for the installer.
8) Is the Amsec ESL20XL keypad tough enough for a commercial site, and will it survive being wiped down?
It is rated commercial. The housing is metal die-cast rather than plastic, with an alpha-numeric slanted keypad, and the keypad is splash proof, so cleaning or a wet hand is not a failure mode. The lock's electronics are encapsulated inside the lock body and sealed against moisture, which is the part that kills cheaper electronic safe locks in back-of-house and garage locations.
9) Can staff leave the safe in a day-lock position with an ESL20XL?
No. The ESL20XL auto-locks the moment the bolt work is thrown, so a safe cannot be left dialed to a day-lock or with the lock sitting open. That is the behavior an MRO or retail operations buyer usually wants standardized across sites, because it removes the most common human failure at close. The lock also uses a dead-latched design with an internal relock device for attack resistance.
10) What happens if we lose the safe combination on an Amsec ESLXL lock?
There is a factory reset combination built into the ESLXL locks specifically so a lost code does not turn into an expensive service call or a drilled safe. Separately, four wrong entries in a row trigger a 15 minute penalty lockout, which stops someone standing there running combinations. Both are keypad-level behaviors, no module required.
11) Can I tie an Amsec ESL20XL safe lock into an alarm system or access control so it only works at certain times?
Yes, through the control port. The ESL20XL can be turned on or off by an access manager, alarm system or other device, which is how you keep a safe from being opened outside business hours or while the system is armed. The control port connection can be brought out externally through the optional expansion module, and A/C power can feed the lock so it is not living on a battery in a monitored install.
12) Does the ESL20XL require two people to open the safe?
Only if you program it that way. Dual control mode makes the lock require two separate combinations before it opens, which is what cash handling and pharmacy procedures usually call for. It is off unless enabled, and like every other ESL20XL setting it is programmed from the keypad rather than through a service tool.
