1) Will the S&G Atlas 1004 electronic lock drop into my existing safe without redrilling the door?
The Atlas 1004 uses the standard S&G magic module footprint, so it mounts in the same hole pattern as other S&G magic module lock bodies. It is also universally handed, meaning the same lock body works right hand, left hand, vertical up, or vertical down without ordering a handed version. The keypad is a quick mount type, so the mounting work on the outside of the door is straightforward.
2) Is the Atlas 1004 safe lock a swing bolt or a deadbolt style lock, and what does that mean for my boltwork?
It is a swing bolt lock. A swing bolt pivots clear rather than sliding, and it is paired here with Auto Secure: the lock automatically relocks once the boltwork is fully extended, so nobody can leave the safe unsecured by forgetting to spin it. The lock bolt is rated to withstand 225 lbs (1000 newtons) of bolt end pressure, which is what stops a forced attack on the boltwork from driving the bolt back.
3) Does the Sargent & Greenleaf Atlas 1004 carry a UL rating for safe locks?
UL Type 1 rated. That is the rating specifiers and insurers ask for on a commercial safe or a container that has to carry a listed lock, and it is stated for the Atlas model 1004 electronic lock.
4) How many people can have their own code on the Atlas 1004 lock?
Two users, and that is the ceiling. The 1004 holds one master code and one user code, plus a management reset code. If you are managing a cash room or a facility where five or six staff each need a distinct, auditable code, this is the wrong lock for the job. Codes are drawn from a pool of one million combinations and are field programmable straight from the keypad, so you can change them yourself after staff turnover.
5) What powers the Atlas safe lock, and what happens when the battery dies?
A single 9 volt alkaline battery, tested up to 3,000 openings. The lock gives a low battery signal before it runs out, and the battery sits at the keypad, so replacing it does not mean opening the safe first.
6) Can I use a different S&G keypad with the Atlas 1004 lock body?
Yes. The Atlas lock body is compatible with a multitude of S&G keypads, so if you are standardizing a row of safes on one keypad style you are not locked to the one that ships with it. The keypad supplied here is the bright chrome Q-Mount, and it is lighted for use in a dim back room or vault.
7) What stops someone from standing at the safe and trying codes until it opens?
Five failed attempts triggers a penalty lockout on the Atlas 1004, so the keypad stops accepting entries for a period rather than letting an attacker keep guessing. Combined with the one million possible code combinations, brute forcing the keypad is not a practical attack.
8) Is the Atlas electronic lock durable enough for a safe that gets opened several times a day?
It is tested to a minimum of 10,000 cycles. For a retail drop safe or a pharmacy cabinet opened a handful of times per shift, that is real service life. Note the code capacity though: two codes total. High traffic openings with many separate users are better served by a multi-user S&G electronic lock than by the Atlas 1004.
9) What is the difference between Star and Basic operation on the S&G Atlas lock?
The Atlas 1004 lets you pick between Star and Basic operating procedures at setup, so the entry sequence can match how your other S&G locks already behave. If you are adding a safe to a building where staff are trained on one method, set the new lock to the same one and you avoid retraining.
