1) Will the Sargent & Greenleaf Spartan safe lock fit my existing gun safe without drilling?
The Spartan mounts to the standard S&G Magic Module footprint, so it drops into a safe already prepped for that pattern with no special tools and no drilling. That footprint is what most S&G-equipped safes use for the lock body, and the swap is a body-and-keypad change rather than a re-prep of the door.
2) Does the Spartan safe lock have to be mounted in a particular orientation on the safe door?
No orientation restriction. The Spartan is universally handed and mounts left hand, right hand, up, or down, so the same lock works whichever way the bolt work runs on your door. Handing does not need to be specified when ordering.
3) How many people can have their own code on the S&G Spartan lock?
Two: one master code and one user code. The manager holds the master and can add, delete, or enable and disable the user code from the keypad, and there is a Management Reset Code as well. Everything is field programmable at the keypad, with one million possible code combinations. If you need codes for a crew or several family members, the Spartan is not the right lock, it tops out at two.
4) Is the Spartan a swing bolt or a throw bolt safe lock, and what does that mean for my bolt work?
Throw bolt, driven by a motor blocking mechanism. You retract and extend the bolt by turning the keypad ring, so the bolt itself is under manual control once the motor releases the block, and the lock bolt takes 225 lbs of bolt-end pressure in a bolt work blocking application. That makes it a match for a safe where the handle-driven bolt work bears directly on the lock bolt.
5) Which keypad style comes with the Spartan Direct Drive, and can I pick a different one?
Direct Drive is offered in the low profile rotating keypad only. The other Spartan keypad styles (one-battery, two-battery, quick-mount, non-rotating low profile) belong to other versions of the lock. The rotating ring is not cosmetic here, it is how the bolt is thrown, so it is not interchangeable with a non-rotating pad.
6) What battery does the S&G Spartan gun safe lock take and how often will I be changing it?
One 9V alkaline battery, tested up to 10,000 openings on that single cell. The motor-driven mechanism draws less than a solenoid design, which is where the battery life comes from. The keypad gives a low battery signal before you run out, plus beeps and LED signals on bolt extension, and the beeper volume is adjustable.
7) I am used to a LaGard keypad sequence. Can I program the Spartan the way I already know?
Both sequences are supported. Star programming follows the S&G convention, Basic programming follows the LaGard convention, so a locksmith or owner coming off either platform can use the entry and code-change routine they already know rather than relearning one.
8) What happens if someone keeps punching in wrong codes on the Spartan lock?
A penalty lockout kicks in after five failed attempts, so the keypad stops accepting entries and a guesser cannot simply keep trying. Combined with one million available code combinations, that is what makes brute forcing the keypad impractical.
9) Is the Spartan electronic safe lock EMP resistant?
Yes. The Spartan is tested to the highest EMP impact standard, which is the usual worry with any electronic lock replacing a mechanical dial on a gun safe. The concern behind the question, that a pulse leaves you locked out of your own safe, is what that testing addresses.
10) Can I tell whether the Spartan lock bolt is actually retracted before I pull the safe handle?
Yes, the keypad carries a bolt position indicator, and bolt extension is confirmed by beeps and LED signals. That matters on a direct drive lock because you turn the ring yourself to move the bolt, so you want positive confirmation the bolt is clear before forcing the handle.
