1) Will a 1/4 inch toggle bolt work in solid concrete or brick?
No. A spring-wing toggle like the J1597 needs an open cavity behind the wall so the wings can snap out and bear on the back face. In solid concrete, solid brick, or filled block there is nowhere for the wings to open, and the anchor will not set. Use a concrete screw or an expansion anchor in solid base material; save the toggle for drywall, plaster, hollow block, and hollow metal.
2) What size hole do I drill for a 1/4 inch toggle bolt?
The hole has to pass the folded wings, not just the screw, so it is much larger than the 1/4 inch bolt. For 1/4 inch toggles that is typically a 7/8 inch hole. Drill it where there is clear cavity behind, push the folded toggle through until you feel it spring open, then pull back on the bolt while you tighten so the wings seat against the back of the wall.
3) Does the J1597 come with the toggle wing or just the bolt?
Toggle bolts are sold as a complete assembly, bolt plus spring wing, and the J1597 is described as a toggle bolt rather than a loose screw or a loose wing. Each jar holds 50 sets. Worth knowing before install: once the wings are through the wall, they are captive in the cavity, so if you back the bolt all the way out the wing drops and is lost. Count on one set per hole and keep spares on the truck.
4) Is a zinc plated toggle bolt OK for outdoor or damp locations?
The J1597 is zinc plated steel, which is a dry-interior finish. It handles normal indoor conditions fine, including plenum and ceiling work, but in exterior, wash-down, coastal, or corrosive environments the plating will give up and the bolt will rust in the cavity where you cannot see it. For those locations specify a stainless toggle instead.
5) What is a round head toggle bolt used for versus a mushroom or flat head?
Round head, which is what the J1597 carries, gives a broad bearing surface that sits proud on the face of the fixture, so it suits bracket feet, strut, hanger plates, and electrical boxes where you want the head to clamp down on metal. It does not sit flush, so if the fixture is countersunk or needs a flush face you want a flat or truss head instead of the round head.
