Metallics TS1212D – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size hole do I drill for a 1/2 inch wedge anchor like the TS1212D?
A 1/2 inch wedge anchor is set in a 1/2 inch diameter hole, drilled with a carbide bit to ANSI tolerances. The hole gets drilled deeper than the embedment you need so debris can settle, the anchor is driven through the fixture, and tightening the nut pulls the cone into the expansion clip to grip the concrete.
2) Can I use a zinc plated wedge anchor like this outdoors or in a wet area?
Zinc plating is a mild corrosion coating meant for dry interior concrete, so the TS1212D suits indoor slabs, equipment pads, and structural steel attachment inside the building envelope. For exterior exposure, washdown areas, pools, or coastal sites, specify a stainless steel or hot dip galvanized wedge anchor of the same 1/2 inch diameter instead.
3) Will a wedge anchor work in block, brick, or hollow deck?
No. The TS1212D is a wedge anchor, which only develops its hold in solid, cured concrete, since the expansion clip needs an uncracked hole wall to bear against. For hollow block or brick, use a sleeve anchor or a toggle type fastener; for hollow metal deck, use a deck specific hanger. Driving a wedge anchor into masonry voids will spin and never torque up.
4) How much of a 12 inch wedge anchor sticks out, and how thick a fixture can it clamp?
Usable thread length on a wedge anchor equals the 12 inch overall length minus however deep you embed it. Set it at the minimum embedment for a 1/2 inch anchor and you have most of the length left for the fixture plus nut and washer; bury it deeper in a thick slab and your grip range drops accordingly. Lay out your embedment first, then confirm the remaining stickout covers your base plate, shims, and grout bed.
5) Does the TS1212D come with nuts and washers?
Wedge anchors like the TS1212D ship as a complete assembly, with the nut and washer already on the threaded stud along with the expansion clip and cone. Nothing additional is needed to set one beyond a 1/2 inch carbide bit, a hammer drill, a hole blowout bulb or brush, and a torque wrench.
6) Is a 25 piece box enough for a job, and can wedge anchors be removed later?
One box of the TS1212D gives you 25 anchors, which covers roughly six four bolt base plates with a spare. Keep in mind wedge anchors are permanent: once the cone sets the clip, the body cannot be pulled back out. You can only back off the nut and cut or grind the stud flush. If you need the fixture to come off and go back on repeatedly, use a female threaded drop in anchor instead.
