Metallics TS5812D – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What diameter hole do I drill for a 5/8 inch wedge anchor?
Wedge anchors are drilled at the nominal anchor diameter, so a 5/8 inch anchor like the TS5812D takes a 5/8 inch carbide hammer-drill bit. Drill deeper than the embedment you need so dust and cuttings have somewhere to go, then drive the anchor through the fixture and tighten the nut to expand the wedge.
2) Will a zinc plated wedge anchor hold up outdoors or in a wet vault?
Zinc plated steel, which is what the TS5812D is, is a dry interior or protected finish. It will corrode in standing water, chloride exposure, or coastal air. For exterior slabs, parking structures, wastewater, or anywhere it stays damp, specify a hot dip galvanized or stainless wedge anchor of the same 5/8 by 12 size instead.
3) Can I use these 5/8 wedge anchors in block, brick, or hollow-core plank?
Wedge anchors are rated for solid concrete only. In hollow block, brick, or hollow-core plank the wedge has nothing to expand against and the anchor will spin or pull. Use a sleeve anchor, a screw anchor rated for masonry, or a through-bolt in those bases. The TS5812D belongs in poured concrete of adequate thickness for a 5/8 anchor's embedment.
4) Is a 12 inch long wedge anchor overkill for bolting a strut channel to a concrete slab?
Usually yes. A 12 inch anchor is for thick fixtures or deep embedment, like heavy base plates, seismic bracing, or structural standoffs where several inches of the anchor are consumed by the material being fastened. For light strut or conduit support on a slab, a shorter 5/8 anchor, or a smaller diameter, is the better pick. The usable thread length that sticks out is what has to clear your fixture plus the nut and washer.
5) Can a wedge anchor be removed and reused once it is set?
No. Once the nut is torqued the wedge clip expands permanently into the concrete, so the anchor cannot be backed out and reused. You can remove the nut and the fixture, then drive the stud flush or cut it off. If the fixture has to come off and go back repeatedly, use a threaded insert or a drop-in anchor rather than the TS5812D.
6) Does the Metallics wedge anchor come with nuts and washers?
Wedge anchors of this type ship assembled with the nut and washer on the threaded end, which is what you tighten to set the wedge. Nothing else is needed to install beyond a 5/8 inch hammer drill bit, a blow-out bulb or vacuum, and a torque wrench or impact to seat the nut.
7) How many 5/8 by 12 anchors do I get if I order one box, and is that enough for a four-bolt base plate run?
One box of the TS5812D is 25 anchors, so a box covers six four-bolt base plates with one spare. Figure a couple extra per job for holes that spall out or anchors that spin during setting.
