Metallics TS506D – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size hole do I drill for a 5/8 inch wedge anchor like the Metallics TS506D?
Wedge anchors are drilled at the nominal anchor diameter, so a 5/8 inch anchor takes a 5/8 inch carbide hammer-drill bit. The anchor is driven through the fixture into the hole, then the nut is tightened to draw the clip up the cone and wedge it against the concrete.
2) Can I use the Metallics 5/8 x 6 wedge anchor in block or brick instead of poured concrete?
Wedge anchors are a solid-concrete fastener. The clip needs solid, uniform material to expand against, so hollow block, mortar joints, and brick are the wrong substrate for the TS506D. For hollow masonry use a sleeve anchor or a screw-type masonry anchor instead.
3) Is the zinc plated finish on the TS506D anchor OK for outdoor use?
Zinc plated steel is a dry-interior finish. It handles occasional damp but will rust in exterior, coastal, or wash-down service. For outdoor pads, rooftop equipment curbs, or anywhere exposed to weather, specify a hot-dip galvanized or stainless wedge anchor rather than the zinc plated TS506D.
4) How thick a fixture will a 6 inch long wedge anchor handle?
The 6 inch length has to cover embedment into the concrete plus the thickness of what you are bolting down plus the nut and washer. At 5/8 inch diameter that leaves room for a fairly heavy base plate or channel, which is why electricians and millwrights reach for the 6 inch over the shorter 5/8 anchors when mounting thick steel or shimmed equipment bases.
5) Does the Metallics TS506D anchor come with a nut and washer?
Wedge anchors ship as a complete assembly: the stud with its expansion clip, plus the nut and washer already threaded on the end. Nothing else is needed to set it beyond a 5/8 inch carbide bit, a hammer, and a wrench.
6) Can wedge anchors be removed or reused after installation?
No. Once the nut draws the clip up the cone, the TS506D is permanently set. You can back the nut off and drive the stud below the surface or cut it flush, but the anchor body stays in the concrete and cannot be pulled and reused. Plan hole locations before drilling.
