Metallics TS507D – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the Metallics TS507D wedge anchor OK for outdoor or damp locations?
It is zinc plated carbon steel, which is a dry-interior or lightly protected finish. Zinc plating handles indoor concrete work, equipment pads inside a building, and strut or conduit support in conditioned space. For exterior exposure, washdown areas, coastal sites, or anywhere standing moisture is likely, go to a stainless or hot dip galvanized wedge anchor instead.
2) Can wedge anchors like the TS507D be used in block or brick instead of poured concrete?
Wedge anchors are a solid concrete fastener. They work by a clip expanding against the wall of a drilled hole, which needs solid, uncracked base material to grab. Hollow block cells, brick, or grout joints will not develop the hold, and the anchor can spin or pull. For hollow masonry use a sleeve anchor or a screen tube with adhesive instead.
3) Why would I need a 7 inch long wedge anchor instead of a shorter one?
Length on a wedge anchor covers the embedment into the concrete plus everything you are clamping on top of it. The 7 inch length of the TS507D leaves room for a thick base plate, a leveling shim stack, a channel or sill, plus the nut and washer, while still getting deep embedment below. If you are only anchoring thin strut or a light bracket flat to a slab, a shorter 5/8 inch anchor is the right call, since excess thread sticking above the nut has to be cut or lost.
4) Do I need to re-drill or can I reuse the hole if I remove a TS507D wedge anchor?
You cannot reuse the hole. Once a wedge anchor is set, the expansion clip has bitten into the concrete wall and the anchor body stays in place; backing the nut off does not release it. Standard practice is to drive the anchor below the surface or cut it flush and patch, then drill a fresh 5/8 inch hole at least a couple of diameters away for the replacement.
5) How many anchors come in a box of Metallics TS507D?
25 anchors per box, and that is how they are packed and sold. Each one comes as a complete assembly with the nut and washer on the threaded end, so you are not buying hardware separately. For a job with a repeating layout, count your hole pattern against 25 so you are not a few anchors short on the last pad.
