Metallics TS512 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What hole diameter do I drill for a 5/8 inch wedge anchor like the TS512?
A wedge anchor is drilled to match its nominal diameter, so the 5/8 inch TS512 goes into a 5/8 inch hole drilled with a carbide hammer bit. Drill deeper than your intended embedment so dust has somewhere to go, blow the hole clean, then drive the anchor through the fixture and tighten the nut to expand the clip.
2) Can the Metallics TS512 wedge anchor be used in hollow block or brick?
No. Wedge anchors need solid, unreinforced-at-the-point poured concrete to work; the expansion clip has to bear against sound material all the way around. In hollow CMU or brick use a sleeve anchor or a screen tube with an epoxy or acrylic adhesive instead. In solid grout-filled block, an adhesive anchor is the safer call.
3) How many anchors come in a box of Metallics TS512?
Five anchors per box. It ships as a box pack, so plan quantities in multiples of five when you're laying out anchor bolt counts for a run of equipment pads or column bases.
4) Is zinc plated steel okay for outdoor or wet locations?
The TS512 is zinc plated carbon steel, which is a dry-interior and lightly protected finish. For exterior exposure, pool decks, coastal air, or anywhere washdown chemicals hit the anchor, specify a 304 or 316 stainless wedge anchor in the same 5/8 inch diameter rather than zinc plated.
5) Why would I use a 12 inch anchor instead of a shorter one?
Length on a wedge anchor has to cover the thickness of what you're fastening plus the embedment into the concrete. At 12 inches, the 5/8 TS512 is for thick fixtures: heavy steel base plates, timber sills, grout beds, machinery frames, or seismic and strut supports where several inches of material sit between the nut and the slab. If you're bolting thin angle or a strut channel straight to concrete, a much shorter 5/8 anchor is the right part.
6) Is a wedge anchor or a drop-in anchor better for mounting electrical equipment to a concrete slab?
Use the wedge anchor, like the 5/8 TS512, when you're fastening through the fixture and can leave the stud protruding, which covers most transformer pads, panel racks, and strut supports. A drop-in anchor is the choice when you need a flush-set internally threaded anchor so the bolt can be removed later, typically for overhead work or where a protruding stud is a hazard. The wedge anchor is the simpler and faster install of the two.
7) Do I need a washer and nut, or is that included with the TS512?
Wedge anchors like the TS512 come assembled with their nut and washer on the threaded end, which is what you turn to set the expansion clip. No separate hardware is needed to set the anchor. What you do need on hand is a 5/8 inch carbide hammer bit and a blow-out bulb or vacuum for the hole.
