Metallics J5026 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a 1/2 x 3 sleeve anchor work in hollow block, or do I need something else?
Sleeve anchors are one of the few expansion anchors that work in solid concrete, brick, and hollow block, because the sleeve expands along its length rather than relying on a single cone at the bottom. In hollow block, land the anchor in the solid web or face shell rather than over a void. If you are fastening into drywall or a hollow stud cavity with no masonry behind it, this is the wrong anchor type, use a toggle.
2) How many anchors come in a jar of Metallics J5026?
25 anchors per jar, each a 1/2 by 3 inch sleeve anchor with its nut included, so you are not chasing separate hardware on the job. The jar pack is the ordering unit.
3) Are these 1/2 inch sleeve anchors zinc plated or stainless?
Steel with a zinc plating. That is a standard interior or protected-location finish for fastening strut, panelboards, conduit racks, and equipment to masonry. For a wet exterior, a splash zone, or a corrosive process area, zinc plated steel is not the right call and a stainless anchor should be specified instead.
4) What thickness of material can I fasten with a 3 inch long sleeve anchor?
The 3 inch overall length has to cover both the embedment in the base material and the thickness of whatever you are clamping, plus the nut and washer. On a 1/2 inch anchor that typically leaves you fastening relatively thin items such as strut, brackets, or equipment feet. If your fixture is thick, step up to a longer anchor in the same 1/2 inch diameter rather than shortening embedment.
5) What do electrical contractors use the Metallics J5026 for?
It is an electrical-trade fastener, used for hanging and bracing to masonry: strut and trapeze supports, conduit racks, panel and enclosure mounting, transformer and equipment feet. The 1/2 inch body suits the heavier end of that work rather than light conduit straps, and the nut comes with each anchor.
6) Can a sleeve anchor be removed or reused once it is set?
Once the nut is tightened the sleeve is expanded permanently against the hole wall, so the anchor is not reusable. You can back the nut off to release the fixture, but the sleeve stays in the hole. Plan replacements as new holes, and order the jar of 25 accordingly.
