Drill 1/4 inch. Wedge anchors use a hole the same nominal diameter as the anchor, so a 1/4 x 2-1/4 wedge anchor goes into a 1/4 inch carbide-bit hole in concrete, drilled deeper than the embedment you need so the dust has somewhere to go. The anchor is driven until the clip seats, then the nut is tightened to expand the wedge.

The anchor is 2-1/4 inches overall. Whatever you embed in the concrete comes off that length first, and the remainder is what is left to pass through your strut, bracket or channel plus the nut and washer. For a 1/4 inch wedge anchor you are generally embedding well over an inch, so plan on roughly a half inch to an inch of usable grip, which is fine for strut channel, conduit clamps and light bracketry but not for thick plates or shimmed standoffs.

Wedge anchors like the JTS1214D are for solid poured concrete. They expand against the wall of the hole, so hollow block, brick and mortar joints can blow out or simply not develop any hold. For hollow CMU wall, use a sleeve anchor or a toggle rated for hollow base material instead.

It is steel with a zinc plating, which is the standard finish for interior and dry locations. Zinc plated steel will corrode in persistent wet, coastal, or chemically exposed areas, so for exterior slabs, wash-down rooms, or parking structures, specify a stainless wedge anchor instead.

Wedge anchors are supplied as a complete assembly: threaded stud, expansion clip, nut and washer are already on the anchor. Nothing else is needed to set one beyond a 1/4 inch carbide bit, a hammer and a wrench.

No. Once the nut is tightened the clip is permanently wedged against the concrete. You can back the nut off and drive the stud below the surface or cut it flush, then patch, but the anchor does not come back out intact and should not be reinstalled. If you expect to relocate the equipment, use a threaded insert or a drop-in anchor you can unbolt from.

100 pieces per jar, packed in a jar rather than a box, which is what you want on a cart or in a gang box where loose anchors get lost. The 1/4 x 2-1/4 size is the common one for strut, conduit straps and small equipment feet, so a single jar usually covers a full floor of rough-in.
