1) Can I use the Metallics JTS3218D wedge anchor in block or brick instead of concrete?
Wedge anchors like the 3/8 x 2-1/4 JTS3218D are for solid, poured concrete only. They expand against the hole wall, and hollow block, brick or mortar joints can blow out under that pressure. For block walls use a sleeve anchor or a screw anchor rated for masonry instead.
2) What hole diameter do I drill for a 3/8 inch wedge anchor?
A 3/8 inch wedge anchor is set in a 3/8 inch hole drilled with a carbide hammer-drill bit, so the JTS3218D takes a 3/8 inch bit. The hole has to be drilled deeper than the embedment so the dust clears, and the anchor is driven flush before the nut is tightened to expand the clip.
3) How thick a fixture can a 2-1/4 inch wedge anchor hold down?
At 2-1/4 inches overall, the JTS3218D is a short-embedment anchor: most of the length goes into the concrete, leaving roughly an inch for the fixture, washer and nut. It suits strut channel, conduit clamps, light brackets and equipment feet. If you are anchoring through a thick base plate or grout bed, step up to a longer 3/8 inch anchor.
4) Is a zinc plated wedge anchor okay outdoors or in a wet area?
The JTS3218D is zinc plated carbon steel, which is a dry interior finish. It holds up in conditioned electrical rooms, warehouses and finished slabs. For exterior slabs, parking structures, wash-down areas or anywhere chlorides are present, specify a stainless wedge anchor rather than zinc plated.
5) Will a 3/8 inch wedge anchor work for overhead conduit and strut hangers?
Yes, 3/8 inch is the common trade size for hanging strut, trapeze supports and conduit clamps off a concrete deck, and the JTS3218D is sized for it. Keep in mind that overhead and vibration-exposed anchoring is often governed by the project spec, so match the diameter and embedment called out on the drawings.
6) Do I need anything else to install these 3/8 inch wedge anchors?
Each anchor comes as an assembly with its nut and washer, so nothing else is bought per anchor. On the tool side you need a hammer drill with a 3/8 inch carbide bit, a blow-out bulb or vacuum to clear the hole, a hammer to drive the anchor, and a wrench or impact to pull the nut up. One jar covers 100 anchor points.
7) Can a wedge anchor be removed or reused once it is set?
No. The 3/8 x 2-1/4 JTS3218D sets permanently, the expansion clip bites the concrete and will not release. The nut and the fixture can come off, but the anchor body stays in the slab. Plan on cutting or grinding it flush if the layout changes, and buy the jar of 100 with some spare count for that reason.
