Metallics JTS103G – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a 3-1/4 inch wedge anchor work for mounting strut or conduit straps to concrete?
Yes. At 3-1/4 inches of overall length, the 1/4 inch JTS103G leaves plenty of thread beyond a strut channel, clamp back or box bracket while still getting the wedge well into the slab. Just subtract the thickness of whatever you are fastening plus the nut and washer from the 3-1/4 inches to see how much embedment you have left.
2) Is a wedge anchor the right choice for hollow block, or do I need a different anchor?
No. Wedge anchors like this 1/4 x 3-1/4 are for solid concrete only, because they work by expanding against the sides of the hole. In hollow block, brick with voids, or drywall, the clip has nothing to grab and the anchor spins. Use a sleeve anchor or a toggle in those bases instead.
3) What hole size do I drill for a 1/4 inch wedge anchor like the JTS103G?
A wedge anchor is sized by its own diameter, so a 1/4 inch anchor goes into a 1/4 inch hole drilled with a carbide hammer-drill bit. Drill the hole deeper than the embedment you need so dust has somewhere to go, clean it out, then drive the anchor through your fixture until the nut and washer pull the cone up tight.
4) Can the Metallics JTS103G galvanized wedge anchor be used outdoors or in a damp area?
The galvanized coating is what you want for exterior pads, parking structures, loading docks and damp mechanical rooms, which is why this version exists alongside plain zinc hardware. For continuous water immersion or coastal splash zones, stainless is the usual choice instead.
5) Does the JTS103G wedge anchor come with nuts and washers?
Wedge anchors are supplied as a complete assembly: the stud with its expansion clip, plus the nut and washer already threaded on. Nothing else is needed to set them other than a hammer drill, the matching 1/4 inch carbide bit, and a wrench to torque the nut.
6) Are wedge anchors removable if I need to relocate a piece of equipment?
Not really. Once the clip is set, a wedge anchor stays in the concrete. You can back the nut off and pull the fixture, then cut or grind the stud flush and patch. If you expect to move the mount later, a drop-in anchor with a machine bolt is the better pick, since the bolt comes back out and the anchor stays in the slab.
7) Is 100 anchors a practical quantity for a jobsite order?
The JTS103G comes 100 to a jar, which is the typical bulk count for electrical and MRO stock. That covers a run of strut hangers or several hundred feet of conduit support on one trip, and the jar keeps the studs from scattering in a gang box.
