Metallics CSH60F – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What drill bit do I need for a 1/4 inch concrete screw like the CSH60F?
A 1/4 inch diameter concrete screw is installed in a 3/16 inch carbide hammer-drill hole. No separate shield, sleeve or expansion plug is used; the 1/4 x 4 CSH60F cuts its own thread in the hole and can be driven with a 5/16 inch hex socket or driver bit.
2) Can I use these to mount electrical boxes and strut to a concrete wall?
That is exactly the use. These are concrete screws stocked as electrical fasteners, used to hang boxes, straps, strut, panels and conduit supports on concrete or block. The hex washer head gives you a broad bearing surface against sheet metal and strut without a separate washer, and the 4 inch length lets you shim or go through furring, insulation or a plywood backer and still reach the concrete.
3) Is a 4 inch concrete screw overkill, or do I need the length?
Length is about standoff, not strength. The 4 inch CSH60F only develops its holding value from the portion threaded into the concrete, so pick the length by adding your fixture thickness plus any standoff to the embedment you want. Use the 4 inch if you are fastening through thick material or a furred-out wall; if you are screwing a thin strap flat to concrete, a shorter 1/4 inch concrete screw is the better choice because you are not paying for shank you cannot embed.
4) Are these blue concrete screws OK for outdoor or damp locations?
The CSH60F is zinc-plated steel with a blue coating, which is a standard indoor and intermittently damp finish. It holds up in a parking garage, basement or covered exterior wall, but for continuous wet exposure, coastal air or treated lumber contact, use a stainless or heavy corrosion-coated concrete screw instead.
5) Do these need a hammer drill, and can I reuse the hole?
Yes, a rotary hammer or hammer drill with a carbide bit is required; a standard twist bit will not cut concrete or block. Blow or vacuum the dust out before driving, because packed dust is the usual reason a 1/4 inch screw spins out or snaps. These are removable, but a hole that has already been threaded will not give full value a second time, so move over and drill fresh.
6) How many anchors come in a jar of Metallics CSH60F?
100 pieces per jar. For a crew doing repetitive strut or box mounting that is a day or two of work on one wall, and the jar keeps them from scattering in a gang box.
7) Will the 5/16 head fit in a standard impact driver?
The CSH60F drives with a 5/16 inch hex socket or a 5/16 magnetic nutsetter in a 1/4 inch hex impact driver, which is the common setup. A low-speed, high-torque impact or a drill in low gear works best; running it fast heats and dulls the thread and can strip the hole in soft block.
