Metallics 1411 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size bolt does the Metallics 1411 lead machine screw anchor take?
The Metallics 1411 is sized for a 3/4-10 machine screw or bolt, meaning 3/4 inch diameter with 10 threads per inch, which is the standard UNC coarse pitch at that diameter. The anchor is internally threaded, so you set the lead shield in masonry first and then thread your own 3/4-10 bolt or threaded rod into it. The bolt is not supplied with the anchor.
2) Can I use the Metallics 1411 lead anchor in drywall or hollow block?
No. A lead machine screw anchor is a solid-base anchor. It works by expanding against the walls of a drilled hole in solid concrete, solid masonry, brick, or stone. In drywall, hollow block cells, or any hollow wall there is nothing for the lead to expand against and the anchor will spin or pull out. For hollow substrates use a toggle or a sleeve-type hollow wall anchor instead.
3) How many anchors come in a box of Metallics 1411?
Each box holds 25 of the 3/4-10 lead machine screw anchors. If you are anchoring strut, panelboards, or equipment bases across a building and need a few hundred set points, order in multiples of 25.
4) Do I need a setting tool for the Metallics 1411 anchor?
Yes. Lead machine screw anchors are installed with a matching setting punch sized to the anchor. You drill the hole with a carbide bit, blow it clean, drop the anchor in flush, then drive the setting tool to flare the lead shield against the hole wall. Skipping the setting step is the most common reason these pull out under load. The setting tool is a separate purchase from the box of 25 anchors.
5) Why would an electrical contractor pick a lead machine screw anchor over a wedge anchor?
Two reasons. The 3/4-10 lead anchor is internally threaded and sets flush with the surface, so there is no stud sticking out of the slab or wall until you thread your bolt in, and you can remove the bolt and re-use the anchor point later. A wedge anchor leaves a permanent protruding stud and cannot be removed cleanly. For hanging strut, transformers, or equipment where the fixture gets serviced or swapped, the removable machine screw anchor is usually the one specified.
6) Is this anchor meant for overhead or ceiling hanging?
Lead machine screw anchors are commonly used overhead in concrete decks for threaded rod drops, but overhead anchorage for conduit, cable tray, and sprinkler work is frequently governed by the engineer of record and local code, which may call for a specifically listed anchor. Confirm the anchor type on your drawings before setting the 3/4-10 anchor overhead.
